Maybe I'll draw something up when bored and see what you think. I've contact some friends in the web business to see what the story is. I don't mind chipping in to afford annual dues either, if we think that will help.

Thanks Erica Personally, seeing the responses here so far tells me that a new site at this point in time is not a good idea because it just doesn't have the kind of backing that I think it should have before something so drastic is done.

The petition idea is good though Also, while we have been told we're not a priority and won't get f.ex a blog style front page which is something I've wanted for a long time, Yac has asked for a bullet list of changes we'd like see done on the site. Freebase posted a thread about it which you guys might wanna check out if you can think of some specific things you are missing.

Funding idea: Cash contributors would have access to the "secret forum" where music sharing with other members from private collections would be a privilege to those contributing.

If admin allow it, we could do that here and fund any improvements ourselves.

If they don't know what they have with this site at least it's members do. If they won't, then the least they can do is to let us.

It's a great idea in theory, if anything I don't think you are going far enough.
You don't need to stay loyal to this place. If people are getting frustrated at the lack of interest by the admin and the place dies a slow death then that's not our problem. It's the admins for not being hands on enough. And I should know I've watched people with great ideas for this place slowly lose patience & interest at being given no time of day whatsoever by the admin, let alone thanks.
If a group of people decide to do it for themselves & it ends up better I say tough shit advameg, you had your chance.

I don't see the need post on both although I can see why some would.
The newer forum will bound to be slower than this one starting up but once it's up & running more people will join up and this place will & should be a distant memory.

I'd be willing to put my money where my mouth is if it's needed.

Yes indeed, I'd love for musicbanter to have something similar to that. Obviously it wouldn't have to look the same, but with the same kind of basic functionality. I'd like to have blog posts work in such a way that when one is made, that blog post is also created on the forums as a thread and any comment made on the blog post will appear as a post in the thread and any post made in the thread would appear in the blog post as a comment.

edit :

People should check out that murmurs site and just take a look at the sort of functionality they have. The blog part of that site is running on wordpress which is free and easy to set up. It can be integrated with phpbb3 (which is free) or some other forum software. Vbulletin is expensive, though.

I believe that's how it works on Murmurs. In case you're interested, the admin there is using forum software and a license from IP Boards, which goes for about $150. However, you can also subscribe to their hosting service, for about $10/month: Hosted Communities. It's contract-free, and I'm pretty sure that one can be set up to show a blog format on the home page. I don't think that option has a webmail service though.

If a new site comes to form, I will probably join for the hell of it. It'd be pretty cool having members have control of the site. I never really like when forums are run by people who never even come around. All we are to them are page hits, they would shut this entire thing down in a second if it would give them a few extra bucks. I just think a new site would be tough to keep going because it'd be hard to bring in new members. And if things start getting boring or people aren't happy, eventually people who chip in the $ might rethink things and stop contributing financially

Just a response to the idea of posting on the two forums simultaneously, it's nonsensical in my opinion, and redundant to be honest.

What would be the purpose of posting on two identical forums? And the thing is, what would eventually happen, is that you would most likely begin to gravitate to the one with which you feel more comfortably. I can't see posting on both sites in phase to be a solution. In my opinion, it's either one, or the other.

As for my vote, I actually voted negative. I think that not everyone would be inclined to make the switch, and members would slowly dwindle, and the inevitable would ensue. Sounds pessimistic, but, it's what I think will happen ultimately if the new site is made.

If, however, there was a way to actually incorporate this site, with another, or to simply try to change this one (not sure what the chances of that are, I'm guessing it's slim to none seeing as the solution is to create an entirely new site), then that would be ideal. In the end, it is indeed a tough choice, maybe as more members respond, we'll see the path this alternative will follow.
