It's Black Metal Week!
Black Metal is a sub-genre of Metal typified by its usually raw or under-produced sound and Satanic/rebellious aesthetic, as well as simplistic guitar phrases and under-accentuated rhythmic dimensions which allow more power for the atmospheric, detached and wandering riffs. Vocals are often higher pitched than Death Metal (or, "screams" rather than Death Metal's "grunts", speaking in slang terms) and can sound detached or unnervingly direct. |
^ If you want to go for something more mellow after all that Black Metal, why not try :-
The FAIR Album Club Once again the club is struggling to survive; there is a poll that closes tomorrow evening and it only has one vote so far. Where's Tore at?
It's Canterbury Scene Week! The Canterbury scene is largely defined by a set of musicians and bands with intertwined memberships. These are not tied by very strong musical similarities, but a certain whimsicality, touches of psychedelia, rather abstruse lyrics, and a use of improvisation derived from jazz are common elements in their work.[1] “The real essence of 'Canterbury Sound' is the tension between complicated harmonies, extended improvisations, and the sincere desire to write catchy pop songs.” “In the very best Canterbury music...the musically silly and the musically serious are juxtaposed in an amusing and endearing way.” [3] |
The FAIR Album Club Just opened two new poll threads. One to vote for our next album :- http://www.musicbanter.com/country-f...-feb-29-a.html The other to discuss The Evening Call by Greg Brown :- http://www.musicbanter.com/country-f...reg-brown.html |

It's Witch House Week!
Witch house (sometimes referred to as drag) is a music genre. The term witch house started out as a joke that was originally used to describe occult-based house music by Travis Egedy (commonly known by the stage name Pictureplane) and his friends in 2009.[1][2][3] As the internet meme grew in popularity, shortly after being pitched to Pitchfork Media,[4] blogs and other mainstream music press began to actively continue the use of the term for marketing purposes, and thus now the label is loosely used to describe a subgenre of industrial music. |
The Monthly Music Trading Post
Is accepting participants for March until the 7th. |

It's EBM Week!
The term EBM (short for Electronic Body Music) was first used by Kraftwerk in the late 1970’s, but more popularly by EBM pioneers Front 242 in the 1980’s to describe their sound, which was more beat-driven and melodic than what was typical of Industrial music at the time. EBM is characterized by repetitive (or danceable) rhythms and undistorted vocals. Although EBM is considered more accessible and dance floor friendly, it still keeps with the experimental and thematic qualities of Industrial music. Some of the most notable EBM acts are Front 242 and Nitzer Ebb. |
The FAIR Album Club Sorry to interrupt Pedestrian`s run of five posts in a row, but I just wanted to mention that there are two new polls just waiting for your votes or comments :- http://www.musicbanter.com/country-f...arch-14-a.html http://www.musicbanter.com/country-f...eil-young.html |

It's Dubstep Week! Dubstep (/ˈdʌbstɛp/) is a genre of electronic dance music that originated in South London, United Kingdom. Its overall sound has been described as "tightly coiled productions with overwhelming bass lines and reverberant drum patterns, clipped samples, and occasional vocals".[1] |

It's Afro-pop Week!
African popular music, like African traditional music, is vast and varied. Most contemporary genres of African popular music build on cross-pollination with western popular music. Many genres of popular music like blues, jazz, salsa zouk, and rumba derive to varying degrees on musical traditions from Africa, taken to the Americas by African slaves. These rhythms and sounds have subsequently been adapted by newer genres like rock, rhythm and blues. Likewise, African popular music has adopted elements, particularly the musical instruments and recording studio techniques of western music.[1] |

Urban Hatemonger steps down from modship
After an unfortunate turn of events, Urban Hatemonger has declared he will step down from his position as moderator. However long the decision has been in the making, the event that caused him to resign from his job happened in the mod cave and so although it remains a mystery to many of us, we can only hope that he will change his decision. |

It's Bebop Week!
Bebop or bop is a style of jazz characterized by fast tempo, instrumental virtuosity and improvisation based on the combination of harmonic structure and melody. It was developed in the early and mid-1940s. It first surfaced in musicians' argot some time during the first two years of American involvement in the Second World War. This style of jazz ultimately became synonymous with modern jazz, as either category reached a certain final maturity in the 1960s. |

Lest we forget ... April's deaths
Sorry, does the thread advertised have to be totally new, ie separate from your journal, or can it be something featured in said journal? If the latter, then perhaps people might be interested in paying their respects to those who have passed on in the music community over the years during April. This is a monthly feature I run, with the help of the Bitter Suite Band website, and reminds us of some of the greats who have gone before us to that Great Gig in the Sky.
Check it out at http://www.musicbanter.com/members-j...ml#post1179247 (If I've misinterpreted the spirit of this thread, apologies, and perhaps someone would care to set me straight...) Trollheart |

It's Screamo Week!
Screamo is a subgenre of hardcore punk which predominantly evolved from emo, among other genres, in the early 1990s. The term "screamo" was initially applied to a more aggressive offshoot of emo that developed in San Diego in 1991, which used short songs that grafted "spastic intensity to willfully experimental dissonance and dynamics."[2] The genre experienced a popularity boost in the late 1990s and early 2000s, and by mid-2000s the over-saturation of the scene encouraged bands to incorporate more experimental elements. Due to the popularity and evolution of the style to a point of being unrecognizable, the term "skramz" is sometimes used to describe bands from the first wave of screamo. Destination Cambodia: Here's a new segment in which we have an excuse to explore the music of the world we may be sorely neglecting. Come visit Cambodia this week! |
