It's Power Pop Week!
"Power pop is a popular musical genre that draws its inspiration from 1960s British and American pop and rock music. It typically incorporates a combination of musical devices such as strong melodies, crisp vocal harmonies, economical arrangements, and prominent guitar riffs. Instrumental solos are usually kept to a minimum, and blues elements are largely downplayed. Recordings tend to display production values that lean toward compression and a forceful drum beat. Instruments usually include one or more electric guitars, an electric bass guitar, a drum kit, and sometimes electric keyboards or synthesizers. While its cultural impact has waxed and waned over the decades, power pop is among rock's most enduring subgenres." |

It's Modal Jazz Week!
A style of Jazz that utilizes musical modes as harmonic framework over traditionally used chord progressions. It took its start in the late 1950s when artists such as George Russell began experimentation with a modal approach to their music. Since then, some of the most well known jazz artists began using modal progressions in their music, including John Coltrane, Miles Davis, and Herbie Hancock. Modal jazz is often cited as a precursor to Avant-Garde Jazz. |

It's Late, But It's Doom Metal Week!
Revelling in tension, despair, and dread, Doom Metal prizes atmosphere more than many of Metals other primary subgenres. Doom uses plodding tempos, repeated chords, and thick, distorted, down-tuned guitars to attempt to envelope the listener in a wash of desperate foreboding that can commonly last to the ten minute mark and beyond. Instruments generally keep to the standard guitar, bass, and drums, but it is not unusual to add keyboard passages and backdrops. |
The Music Banter General Album Club

It's Flamenco Week!
Flamenco is a traditional music style from Spain. It is primarily music for vocals and acoustic guitar, but is also often accompanied by traditional percussion. In its present form flamenco guitarists and singers are often accompanied by modern instrumentation such as piano, bass guitar and wind instruments. Flamenco music is based on the highly typical phrygian or dorian scales which lends it its characteristic melancholia. The singing can be especially emotional, while the guitar playing is characterized by typical, fiery rhythms and is often used to accompany traditional flamenco dances. |

Is talking about the Pale Fountains' From Across the Kitchen Table, the selection for 1985. It's Garage Rock Week! Garage rock is a raw form of rock and roll that was first popular in the United States and Canada from about 1963 to 1967. During the 1960s, it was not recognized as a separate music genre and had no specific name. In the late 1970s, some rock critics retroactively identified it as an early incarnation of punk rock, and it is sometimes called garage punk, protopunk, or 1960s punk; however, the music style has predominantly been referred to as garage rock. |
