Weekly Themes on MusicBanter

This thread is for discussing and hopefully organizing an idea brought up in the "http://www.musicbanter.com/announcem...days-like.html" thread.

The idea is for each week on musicbanter to have a theme, f.ex big beat week or swing jazz week. A thread about the theme which possibly includes a compilation could be made for each week, but what we hope most is that it will inspire members to check out new music and write about it, f.ex in their journals.

Actually, it doesn't have to be each week even, it could be every other week or even theme months. Let's discuss it here!

Here's a list of suggestions for weeks that I've thrown together. If I was to make a calendar, I'd just find a way to randomize this list! If you see something you don't like for other reasons than you have no particular love for that genre (perhaps you think many of the genres are too specific), please write a post about it.

Funk Rock

'Funk Rock' which includes subgenres Funkcore, Funk Metal, Synth Funk, & Punk Funk. :)

VEGANGELICA 05-30-2010 08:30 AM

I feel this is a great idea, Tore. I recommend bimonthly themes, but that's just because I think I wouldn't have enough time to give a weekly theme the attention I'd like before the next week's theme arrived. Other people might really like weekly themes.

I notice you don't have the Canterbury scene on your list! ;) I know it isn't really a "genre" but a combination of avantgarde, progressive rock, and jazz...still, why not add that! Maybe it can serve as an example of a mish-mash genre.

I like the fact that "easy listening" is on the list. I hadn't expected that! Heh heh...the thought of MusicBanterites commenting heavily on Muzak will be a thing I'd like to see.

Does MusicBanter already have set times when people listen to a list of songs together while in the shoutbox, so that they listen at the same time? Another forum I'm part of (cough cough - Gaa! It feels like betrayal!!) does that, and the times I've been able to join in were lots of fun. If MB doesn't have that sort of thing, it might be nice to have a list of youtube songs or downloads representing each weekly or biweekly theme, and then set a couple times in the week (to account for different time zones and schedules) when people who are interested can meet in the shoutbox to listen together to the same songs at the same time.

Freebase Dali 05-30-2010 11:37 AM

Hey Tore, you could probably write a simple program to auto-randomize the list. Or I can write one in Visual Basic after the list is settled and send it to you.

Thrice 05-30-2010 11:40 AM

I'd like to see some dubstep up in that beast too! I like Vegans idea of bi-weekly.

Freebase Dali 05-30-2010 11:42 AM

Definitely Dubstep. And Breaks.
Maybe some Lounge?
Acid Lounge?
Acid Jazz?

Guybrush 05-30-2010 01:45 PM

Stuff added!

Thanks for the positive feedback! Vegangelica, I'd love to have a Canterbury week .. I'm gonna add it :D

I kinda like the idea of having it weekly. The idea is to hopefully make musicbanter a bit more inspirational and stimulating. I'm just guessing that although I hope people will try to check out every week's theme, I'm guessing people are gonna be a bit choosy on whether they like the theme or not and if so, it might be nice that they don't have to wait very long until one comes along which they like .. maybe?

Or is that promoting lazyness?

edit :

I also get a feeling that enthusiasm doesn't last so long here. I'm thinking if it's two weeks of funk metal or even a month, wouldn't people only stay interested for the first week or so?

Freebase, I'll randomize it as soon as we've got a list which seems satisfactory :)

James 05-30-2010 01:47 PM

I love this idea and would most definitely participate.

EDIT: We could also aswell as the comps, trades and journal entries. Have special spotlight threads on specific artists in the genre, Where people discuss the artists and if you feel like it review them. Like in the Canterbury one there could be a "Spotlight on Caravan" thread where people can discuss the band or review some of their works. Just an idea.

Freebase Dali 05-30-2010 02:18 PM

Yea I don't think each genre should have a whole 2 weeks. 1 week should be sufficient enough time without becoming dragged out. That's my vote anyway.

James 05-30-2010 02:20 PM

Yes I agree if there are so many genres to get through, One week should suffice.

Guybrush 05-30-2010 02:33 PM

What I was aiming for with the list was a sort of mix of niche genres and more broad ones. I think it's nice to have a jazz week and a more specific jazz swing week later on, although preferably the two should be spread apart a bit temporally speaking.

I'm quite eager to set this plan into motion. I'm thinking we could start the first theme week on monday the 7th of june. How long time it takes to sort out the list is really the potential efficiency bottleneck at this point, so I tried to make it cover as much of the stuff I think is important as possible.

I want to have a finished list in a few days and so I'm grateful to anyone who will add to it!

We can think of some funny things too perhaps. Bavarian week? Yodels and polka music?

James 05-30-2010 02:36 PM

No-Wave and Tropicalia.
Need to be added!!!

Guybrush 05-30-2010 02:43 PM

Alright, I can add them, but we need to have some kind of criteria about what can go on the list and what shouldn't :p:

I'm sceptical to anything which requires a lot of information to be understood. In essence, if people can't just search for it on wikipedia and get a general idea or at least some names of bands or artists, it might be a bit advanced. The reason is if people can't figure it out on their own, then we rely on someone to explain it in a thread and although this is something we should try and do each week, that someone who knows the genre really well might be gone.

I have to admit I don't have a clear idea of what no wave and tropicalia music is so I would definetly like a thread then to guide me in the right direction!

Can you make them when the time comes, james? :D

James 05-30-2010 02:44 PM

Well these are bothgenres I completely love and I would contribute to a thread I guess.

Alright, including them :)

James 05-30-2010 04:02 PM

So shall Jazz be the first?

I thought it would make sense to just randomize the list and see what comes first and then do it in that order! Then perhaps just intervene slightly if two very similar themes are next to eachother.

James 05-30-2010 04:16 PM

^Sounds like a plan.

PS Will what Mojo said be possible? For a message to be displayed upon a user entering the site? We could get some of the more arty members to design a banner or so if it is possible.

Mods can make announcements that show up in all forums at least, so that's easily taken care of. :)

James 05-30-2010 04:22 PM

Cool.
I'm really excited for this.

iron9567 05-30-2010 04:30 PM

Quick question about this idea. When the time periods are over for each theme. Will the threads be left open or be locked? May sound like a silly question, but something to think about in this idea.
thanks
the iron man

James 05-30-2010 04:35 PM

^My view(Just IMO), is that they are locked but there is a sticky that contains links to all of the threads for future reading. Watcha think?

Yeah, you are right. I change my vote to one genre per week, which would probably keep up momentum better than a biweekly genre.

You and your yodeling! :D

Actually, I notice you don't have klezmer music on your list. Not that klezmer music is funny, although it can be, but it is a distinct and unique genre and a lot of fun! Klezmer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

James (not meaning to fight wi' cha), my vote would be to keep the threads open indefinitely so latecomers can still participate even after the week ends. I do like the idea of having a sticky with links to all the threads, though!

Urban Hat€monger ? 05-31-2010 10:09 AM

If you're going to have themes why have everything so genre based?

Necromancer 05-31-2010 10:33 AM

Crossover (music)

Besides describing music of a distinct genre that becomes broadly popular, the term "crossover" has sometimes been used to describe music that deliberately mixes genres, whether or not this music proves to be popular with a mass audience.
Other examples of crossover in music are bands that play a mix of genres such as funk, rap, rock, metal and/or punk, for instance bands like Faith No More, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Primus and Rage Against the Machine, 311, or crossover thrash bands such as D.R.I. or Municipal Waste.
Just thought that I would bring the subject of crossover music up, for no particular reason. (just a suggestion)

*Takes outside and puts on his boxing gloves*
What would the point in weeks if the discussion carries on after the week, I mean if the threads stay open the fixed weeks would have no purpose as when we are promoting Folk week the discussion for Rap week will still be happening.

Guybrush 05-31-2010 02:21 PM

^There are plenty of crossover genres already in the list, like f.ex funk metal and fusion. I don't mind threads staying open myself, but collecting links in a sticky is of course a good idea.

They don't have to be genres of course, but it's practical in that it's easy to get a list of a whole bunch and they're somewhat defined so that people should be communicating about the roughly same thing. People can do simple research on genres on their own and find out who the main artists are .. This is harder to do if it's sci-fi or dance week.

I would like there to be a thread about each theme. I would like it if that thread teaches something basic about something, for example about a genre. That's also harder to do if it's middle earth week or robot week.

Veg, adding klezmer :)

Guybrush 06-02-2010 05:05 AM

Alright, by friday I'll randomize the list and start setting up a calendar. It's important to do this some days before the week starts because it gives us a little time to mentally prepare, for example prepare for that theme's thread. If it's a theme I don't know at all, I might ask someone else to write it!

So, if you have any sugggestions, consider writing them now :) I'm not saying the list is final on friday, but it will be more final than it is now at least.

Guybrush 06-05-2010 01:29 AM

If anyone feel they know reggae well enough to write a general reggae thread when the time comes (monday), that would be awesome! If noone steps up to the task, I'll try myself although I'll admit that aside from knowing about a few jamaicans, I consider myself reggae clueless!

Freebase Dali 06-05-2010 05:59 PM

General Reggae thread similar to this one?
http://www.musicbanter.com/reggae-sk...on-reggae.html

Or more general than that?
In either case, Jackhammer & Bulldog would probably be a good choice for that. :D

Guybrush 06-06-2010 02:31 AM

^I almost forgot about that, but just almost. However, I've already sent a PM to another resident Reggae appreciator who's agreed to do it :D

His short name starts with an R and ends with a Z.

James 06-06-2010 04:37 AM

Rezz?

Urban Hat€monger ? 06-06-2010 04:48 AM

No he means Rhissundaygirl09z

James 06-06-2010 04:49 AM

Had no idea he was a reggae nut.

Guybrush 06-07-2010 03:29 PM

It seems he's sick, so the reggae thread supposed to kick off the theme week is a little late!
