I've noticed that this forum has a very rigorous censorship on profanity. I can understand if you want to ban f*ck and c*nt due to the possibility of children finding their way here, but seriously, why are you banning "g*y"? You can't even spell out the name of the biggest soul artist in the world, it's ridiculous.

Some idiots consider that word to be offensive. Now they don't even want it to be called homosexuality, but instead "Alternative Lifestyles." It is people trying to force others to feel bad for them.

I am with you all the way though.

Oh look , it's the monthly 'I hate the swear filter' thread.

If this genuinely bothers people then PM the admin.

If enough people pm Admin then it's possible to have the filter removed.
It's not written into the vbulletin code, like I once seen somebody suggest in a previous thread, but is an option that can be disabled.
Admin have the option to choose individual words for censorship, so even if all the words aren't uncensored it is possible to have the word "gay" restored, for example.

The fact that at least once a month a new poster mocks it and no one really sees it as necessary or defends it and most people just go around it anyway, probably suggests it's a bit archaic and should be removed. I pmed the admin a year ago when everyone first yelled at me for having common sense. Urban you of all people should know hatred is better expressed with dirty words.

I find it sardonic how ****** isn't even filtered it's the only word bar mexicans that I think deserves to be considered expletive.

I dont really care enough, but it is kind of ridiculous. I mean the reason its there is because alot of poeple on this forum are under 18. Lets get real. We discuss drugs, sex, and rock and roll on these forums but cant even say the bands names sometimes without getting filtered. No it doesnt bother me enough to PM anyone but seriously its just kinda pointless to have it. I mean as if any asshat kid doesnt know what the missing ***'s are. As if the kid isnt saying the words themselves, or as if the kid isnt look at porn. I think our youngest user has to be Hell Fairy or something. Look at her avatar..... look at the things she says.... these are the peoples minds we are trying NOT to corrupt? I think the older people on the forum are they use their cursewords more sparingly.

I think me and alfred are the youngest on the forum, I'm pretty sure Hell Fairy is at least 16. The swear filter's ridiculously easy to get around people, and everyone knows what you meant anyway.

Its not a matter of how difficult it is to get around, its the fact that you have to go out of your way to do it. I am not trying to TRICK the forums so I can see my own curse words. Its just kinda pointless, but if anything it just takes away from the post a little bit.

I don't bother going around it, people know what I mean.

I discovered the swear filter for myself last night when posting a whole heap of cuss words about Oasis...hehehehehehe... didn't know they had a filter here until then!

It doesn't really bother me - I am not at all in any way offended by swearing / coarse language - in some settings, depending where I am, I use it alot myself, but hey, I guess it doesn't hurt to express myself a little more eloquently by leaving out the swear words...

It doesn't really matter, regardless of the **** being in your text or not, you can pretty much tell when people are swearing and which word they are using... :-)

Swear filters are stupid. It's irritating to have parts of your words censored when you're writing a harmless argument or about an artist whose name might be ***e or Moor****.

Furthermore, it may even censor links that you want to post.

Stupid.

We need to concentrate on censoring certain people rather than words.

Why this word G.ay sensored in this forum?

I know sometimes people use it in an insulting manner, but I have yet to see it on MB at all.

Honestly I have no idea. The filter here is extremely inconsistent with what gets censored and what doesn't.

I'm pretty sure that it's only filtered because the maturity level around here has not always been what it is now.





There are ways around the filters though, if it bothers you.

I think its the higher the post count, the less intense the filter is. This probably meaning that the admin dosent want people just coming on her and filling the forum up with bad language.

Homosexual is an alternative word (even though most people find that more offensive than g.ay)

It has absolutely nothing to do with post count. The people with higher post counts just know the tricks to getting around the filters.

For example...: Gay, Fuck, and bitch should all be filtered, but I've been around these forums (and vBulletin forums) long enough to know how to trick the system.

How'd you do that?

Nope. But seriously I don't think there is anything the mods can do about the chat filter. You'd have to take that up with administration. And if you survive you can share stories with us on how you failed.

It's a lot easier than that if you know how.

that was the first thing i did. fake images in image brackets. you could probably just do the brackets. here let me experiment for a few seconds:

Gay - Indent brackets between g and a ; bold brackets between a and y
gay - Color brackets between letters
g[IMG][/IMG]a[IMG][/IMG]y - empty image brackets

there's probably more.
