Social group spam
i've been browsing the 'groups' thing casually and i noticed that there was a fair amount of spammers which cropped up -- people without posts yet somehow still managed to have links in their profiles & comments.
is there any way to get rid of these or put restrictions on who is allowed to join groups?

Well spotted - the social groups and blogs don't tend to be as heavily moderated as the main forum.
When creating a group, it is possible to set restrictions which require members to be approved before joining... this could definitely be used to filter out the spammers. I've just cleaned out the ones you were talking about - they're mostly the same person.
