new thread idea
hi, i was thinking about what kind of accent everyone here has. i thought it'll be cool if we record ourselves saying something quickly, to show other people what accent we have. i tried uploading an audio file but it didnt work. just a suggestion. bye

Hmm...
I could imagine that thread getting pretty hilarious. I don't have an accent though, so it wouldn't be beneficial to anyone if I made a recording. I do have some impressive burps though... |

After being in the military, I've met A LOT of different people from different places. When asked where I'm from and they find out I'm from Louisiana, they always remark that I don't have the accent and in fact don't have one at all. I speak extremely flat. If that's an accent, then it's new to me. EDIT: I'm talking about American English, btw. Although I'm no professor about it... So the above is merely deductive reasoning. |
But to the British it would be an accent, an American accent.

^ True.
I remember hearing a British guy saying Americans have no accents... I don't remember when or where. I guess I got that perspective from what I'd heard. But since I'm not British, I'd need a British person to confirm or deny that to Brits, Americans have or don't have an accent. |

Sigh.
How long is it going to take me to help you realize that I'm not talking about "accent" in the dictionary definition sense of the word? Forget what I said about British people. It doesn't matter. Re-read everything I said, minus the British parts, and instead of the word "accent" appearing in your eyes and brain, replace it with "the way people compare my speaking in relation to others in America". Then repeat the following phrase: "Veridical Fiction has no accent" until it makes sense. However long that might take. I already understand your point. You seemingly are incapable of understanding mine. Truly, we can have a conversation and not worry about whether a word we choose is the absolute truth in the context we're using them. It's like me saying the leaf of a tree is green and you saying "Actually, that's only true in 98 percent of trees". |

At that point you brought in this thing about some British guy saying that Americans don't have accents which is obviously wrong whether you take it to mean we literally don't have accents or whether you take it to mean that we don't have distinct regional accents. |

Sorry. Didn't mean to sound condescending. I got no hint that you understood what I was saying when you kept pushing the "everyone has accents" fact. My bad. I dunno where I was going with the British thing. I just mentioned that a Brit told me Americans have no accent. That could have been left alone. :D |

I only recently found myself able to distinguish Canadians from their yankee brethren as well, they really don't sound the same... So maybe I'm not the best person to ask |
