From what you claim (you could be from Taiwan for all I know), you have an American accent. British are of course crap at differentiating between North American regional accents, except we can usually tell if they are from the south or that place in Fargo.
I only recently found myself able to distinguish Canadians from their yankee brethren as well, they really don't sound the same... So maybe I'm not the best person to ask

Some of my people are from that area. My grandmother had a hardcore Acadian accent.

This is how I understand it yes. We can recognise three accents from that part of the world and they are 1) North, 2) South and 3) Canada.
