I'm not sure I like all of these restrictions being put on new members.
Legitimate people who come here just want to get on with posting & debate things like anybody else & I don't see why a bunch of spammers should stop them from doing so. And I don't really see it's that much of a problem. I'd say 98% of the spam that's here is gotten rid of. It might take 2 minutes or it might take 2 hours to get deleted but it does get done. And you are always going to have that no matter what things you put in place to avoid it. People will always find shortcuts. And one more thing. Please please PLEASE can people only use the report post button for spam as a last resort. If someone comes along and starts 10 spam threads there's no need to report it because it's blatantly obvious they're there. If they're not deleted it's because there are no mods around to do it or because they're doing something else. Feel free to report any that have obviously been missed (ie spam that's about a day old) but there really isn't any need to report anything else , we already know the tell tail signs of a spammer and can find this stuff easily enough. We appreciate the help , but personally in virtually all cases I see the spam and have gotten rid of it before I even see the reported post , and I think that's the same for most of the other mods. And if several people report the same post it does end up spamming our mod forum.

Actually, I do agree fully with you guys in that a the best possible countermeasure against spamming would only affect spammers and not regular posting members. After Jackhammer's posts, I'm kind of curious to see what's coming.

I always nail spammers because when I use "New Posts" and see 9 threads with the last commentery by [name] I generally check a few out and by the third one I just shut him down.
So when people complain in the thread about the poster, that actually protects them. You're better off reporting them.

compared to other boards this place is pretty good about managing spam.
Its been at the same relatively low level since I've joined(except for the occasional member who would bring an absolute ****storm, "loser" comes to mind) I don't think its anywhere near the point where people are getting prevented from having a good discussion. |

The reason I feel I see a lot of spam is basically because what I do has me sitting in front of a computer and microscope all day, so I get to see what goes on. There's an incredible amount of spam being posted, but the moderators are doing a great job at removing it.
As Jackhammer posted, it would be interesting to see what would happen if the mods weren't around for a week. Quote:
