^ well I always imagine people to be the same age as me, and then they turn out to have 3 kids. I always build this mental image of the person, and it gets really hard to edit it after a while.

What's so hard about looking at someone's profile? It's not snooping. Whatever is in there is public information and the user knows that.
If they decide not to state their age (which a lot of people don't) then it wouldn't be displayed under their avvy anyway. Ultimately it'd be up to you to ask.
I don't think the problem here is age not being displayed in every post...
