I haven't been here long enough to have a weighted opinion, but I just want to echo Rezz's sentiment...
Being that this is a music forum and there are folks abiding that quite possibly make music, it would be a selling point to provide an area to regular members in which to post links to original works (that would be invisible to non-members) that could be critiqued by other musicians frequenting this site.

Having such an area can do no harm to the overall welfare of the site if it's properly managed. In fact, I am more than surprised that something like this isn't well into its adulthood.
But.. I haven't been here long enough to know the possible reasons why that isn't a part of the forum, so I can't pass judgement.
All I can do is provide yet another point of view in favor of such a thing.

We have

It's called the Members Journal forum

We used to have a promotions forum for this sort of thing and we got rid of it.
Why?
Because 99.9999% of the time the posts in it were by people who had no intention of being a part of this forum and it ended up being a dumping ground for spam.

So we now have a forum where members can make a thread of whatever they wish with moderator approved posts. And that includes posting your own music. As far as I can see that's the best solution to the problem.
A separate forum would just encourage more spam.

We had a 'Promotion' forum not too long ago, specifically for members who wanted to advertise/promote their bands, but it didn't stop spammers from starting threads all over the boards and spamming the forums.
These people would make an account with no intention of joining the community on a regular basis, make one post, then never return. Consequently adding nothing other than more work for the moderators and defeating the point of having one in the first place.

We want MusicBanter to be centred around it's regular members only and encourage more of a community based forum, so we decided to scrap the 'Promotion' section and observe a zero tolerance policy with the exception of allowing regular members only, to self promote at the discretion of the moderators.
Having a Promotion forum encourages promotion and free advertising.
Since we got rid of it we've found there's been less work to do, as the one post spammers are easier to identify and deal with as they come along.

I understand what you guys are saying... But I was talking about a sub-forum that's only accessible to members meeting a post-count standard.

If you guys tried that and weren't successful, then forget what I said.

I've seen it work in forums before. I moderated on breaks.fm before the admin team split up and the whole site began to crumble. We had a very successful music posting thread that was 1) Not visible to non members and 2) Only postable by those beyond a certain post count.
That ensured the absence of spammers.
It became a big selling point for the forum, because it was, obviously, a music forum.
People wanted to be a part of the whole forum because they were able to interact with the people who were giving them advice about their music.

Anyway, I know it's not a dumb idea. I've seen it work.
It just has to be managed properly.
Until the management of such a thing is ironed out, you can't expect anything resulting to work properly.

This has probably been said but adding a post count to post in MB's Most Wanted would be well fit. I constantly see people with 1 post listing 10 things they would like people to find. Usually albums that are extremely common anyways. Just today someone asking for anything by Elliot Smith...I mean come on for ****s sake.

I don't think the admin is going to go to all that effort for something so small anytime soon. Especially with it being a thread about a subject that we have been told not to encourage.
You'll just have to put up with it.

The volume of posts in there would be cut down dramatically if everyone learned how to blogsearch in the first place. Since I started using blogsearches I've posted one request, which I can't find to this day.

Agreed. My biggest problem with blogs though is that often its in a different file type than my mp3/computer plays. I guess I need to find a good free file converter.

Get foobar2000... Plays most music files, and can mass covert them to mp3 if you want anyway.
