I was just thinking about a possible way to deal with self-promotion and spamming on this forum.

Why not have an artist promotion section in the Artists Corner and have a clear rule stating that all promotion must be in this section? What this can possibly do then is isolate spamming and self-promotion to this section, making it more manageable, and keep the rest of the site free of spam and self-promotion threads. Also get rid of the 15-post rule as well so the spammers won't have to post pointless rubbish before they post their link in this section. Really nobody's going to read their crappy threads and click their links anyway but it will keep the spammers happy and us happy as well, some of the spammers might even stick around and contribute to the forum instead of disappearing or being banned.

It could however though increase the volume of spammers coming here to promote which may or may not cause problems, it's difficult to know really. What do the moderators think?

We did have a promotions thread.

It added nothing to the place and they still advertised in the main forums.

That's the reason the current rules are in place.

That answers that question then.

I always click new posts, and their crappy threads would clog up the new posts function. So no, spammer and their crappy music can leave.

Yeah, I'm inclined to think that such users wouldn't read the rules or look for said thread, and would just post their link wherever they felt like it.

I'm not sure the 15 posts rule really does anything other than annoy everyone by forcing spammers to bump 15 random threads with one word messages. They are going to advertise anyways, the 15 posts thing just adds 15 more posts of spam to the equation in my opinion.

I think the 15 post rule should be either increased to 30 or got rid of altogether. 15 posts is a piece of doddle for a spammer and 30 posts will perhaps frustrate them and put them off. It could however put off some new members though, but if they want to post a link to something they're going to just have to contribute a bit first.

Well, it does give us a period of time in which we can warn or ban the user once we catch on to what they are doing, which is always fairly obvious. I imagine it does deter a percentage of people from following through with their links as well.

it's fine at 15 posts.

It's there for 2 reasons.

1. Waste their time.
2. Make spam easier to find

Increasing it to 30 wouldn't make any difference and would just be more annoying if no mods are on,
