Yes, I unstickied the 2019 threads, other suggestions are welcome of course

DwnWthVwls 01-14-2020 02:23 PM

All of them. The popular threads will remain at the top. Let the ones that cant hack it die.

I am making a reminder here. Many sticky threads on top of the page are not being used so much, maybe they should be unstuck and leave 2 or 3 popular threads in each forum. It is certainly confusing to have all these threads on top.

The names of threads make it pretty easy to differentiate between them.

Lisnaholic 09-28-2020 08:32 AM

Is it Krautrock or is it me?

Krautrock pops up regularly on MB as new people discover it or want to share a rec. On MB it's spread across several sections: Avant Garde, Electronica, Rock&Metal and Prog&Pysche. It doesn't really have a "homebase" thread, like other genres that come to mind. For instance, from MB's first page, it takes one click to go to the Ska section, another click on the first thread at the top, and there you are, picking up on the latest Ska recs.

You can't do that with Krautrock, which is why I'm suggesting we have a stickied thread in the Prog&Psyche subforum. Marie is kind of tentatively on board with the idea, but it would be nice to have a comment from other members so that she doesn't dismiss me as a lone crank. If you think it's a good idea, you could put a thumbs up below or follow Tristan's comment in this thread:-
https://www.musicbanter.com/rock-met...ml#post2137056

In detail, the thread could begin with an index to other Krautrock threads, then be a massive Krautrock Recommendation thread, which we already have as the Kosmische Musik/Krautrock thread. It could be done by merging two or perhaps three threads, and go under the admittedly clunky title: Krautrock Index and Recommendation Thread. Thus Krautrock would come of age and have a long, permanent Rec thread, hopefully more active because more accessible, the way it is for many genres here.

Lisnaholic 12-28-2020 06:31 AM

Sorry to be grumbling one more time about the merging of threads- a problem that drives me to distraction, but no else seems to care about :(

This morning it's the Argentinian music threads: we have 3:

https://www.musicbanter.com/country-...argentina.html Argentina
https://www.musicbanter.com/country-...argentina.html How good is the music of Argentina ?
https://www.musicbanter.com/country-...argentina.html Popular musicians from Argentina

All three threads are a mix of modern and traditional, so they can't be seperated on that basis. Which is rather my point: is there any basis for having seperate threads?
__________________________________________________ ________________

We also have two threads on Fionn Regan, although in this case, it's super easy to distinguish between them: one thread is titled "Fionn Regan" while the other one is titled "Fionn Regan".

https://www.musicbanter.com/country-...onn-regan.html
https://www.musicbanter.com/country-...onn-regan.html
__________________________________________________ _________________

Am I really the only person on MB who thinks like this:
"I'd like to post something about Krautrock/ Argentinian music/ Fionn Regan. Where shall I put my post? These MB threads are really confusing - the easiest thing to do is not bother."

adidasss 12-28-2020 06:45 AM

Sure I care about a tidy forum but I think that wouldn't deter me from posting. I'd just post in the most recent thread and ask the mods to maybe merge the different threads. I don't think they will go scouring the forum for those kinds of things by themselves. It needs to be highlighted and then it's easy as pie to fix...:)

Lisnaholic 12-28-2020 07:11 AM

Thanks, addidass. I agree that we shouldn't expect mods to go through the boards looking for duplicate threads to merge.
Recently, Marie was kind enough to consider sorting out the Krautrock threads at my suggestion. The problem was that no one would even post a thumbs up to support the idea that we have one permanent go-to thread for Krautrock:-

Consolidated the requested threads :)

RE: krautrock I missed that convo. Merging them is fine but a sticky feels unnecessary. If it's popular enough it should stay afloat on the relatively quiet prog and psych subforum.

Brilliant! Thank you so much, Frownland!

@ Trollheart: Yeah, I noticed that but as Frownland is now my god, I'm prepared to overlook it. ;)

I'm not sure if themes/skins are already a feature and I just overlooked it like a goof, but I think themes/skins would be a good addition to the forum. I've always had a weak spot in my heart for "Midnight" themes that incorporate black with other colors, like red or dark blue.

I don't know how possible it is to get a format that doesn't hurt my eyes, but I would welcome it after all these years.

If you guys use Chrome, check out the extension Dark Reader. I've been using it for years.

SuperSonicUmbreon 02-18-2021 07:04 PM

Thanks for the suggestion, Exo. It works on most sites it seems, but on the homepage of the forums, it makes the blue a bit darker and doesn't work (at least on my end) for sections and threads. It'll flicker the right color scheme and then it'll go back to normal. For some reason, this message box is darker, though. I might can find another extension that does practically the same thing, though.

Marie Monday 02-19-2021 01:43 AM

Only music related posts count

adidasss 02-21-2021 06:54 PM

The chatroom thread should probably not be stickied anymore, it's been dead ages.

That's fair. Those were the days though.

Hi - Sorry to interrupt here, but I'm currently unable to send a private message to anyone on the site. Is there a technical problem? Thanks!

Edit: When I try to send a PM, I receive a notification stating "You may only post 2 messages every 1440 minutes."

Plankton 07-06-2022 03:51 PM

Iirc, if your "Inbox/Sent" folder is full, that'll hap'n Cap'n.

ribbons 07-06-2022 04:07 PM

Thank you. I had asked Exo to delete a photo from posts in which you and I had conversed, actually - but to leave the text of our conversation intact, which he initially did. Those posts later disappeared altogether and I was actually not able to even post to the board for the past 30 minutes or so. Received a message saying that my account may have been deactivated. Anyway, likely a misunderstanding.

ribbons 07-06-2022 04:13 PM

Just deleted nearly all contents of my Inbox/Sent folders - but still can't PM. Still receiving the notification, "You may only post 2 messages every 1440 minutes."

I'm sure the situation will resolve eventually.

I missed the part where you asked to leave the text. I can fix that. As for the PM issue, we're looking into it.

EDIT: Frown fixed the posts.

ribbons 07-06-2022 08:36 PM

Thank you both!

Allow sales of all music related items.

No.

Ain't happening.

Guybrush 07-07-2022 11:52 AM

Right now there's no moderator on. Perhaps you should consider asking someone native to non-US timezones?

I'm not nominating myself. How about Trollheart or Adidass or something?

Trollheart 07-07-2022 01:14 PM

I already said no. Not that I'm a mod, but, you know, it's very clearly in the rules. This ain't a marketplace. There are thousands of them. The last thing we want here is a load of goombahs coming here to sell their wares. As Jesus once said, and I quote, **** that for a game of legionnaires.

SGR 07-07-2022 01:21 PM

Not to mention this site is just not designed to be a marketplace. Some people think it's just "flip a switch" and any site can become a marketplace. Doesn't work that way. This is Music Banter - not Music Huckster.

Pretty sure Marie is native to a non-US timezone. As hard as it is to believe, she just doesn't spend all her waking time on here.

Exactly, so maybe it's a good idea to recruit one or two more.

Plankton 07-07-2022 01:32 PM

There's some buy/sell sections on a couple of forums I frequent, but it's just more police work for the mods. Making sure the sellers have their items displayed correctly with their name/date/etc. is the main deficiency. Access to that section of the forum is only granted to members after 30 days as well. Lots of other disclaimers too. It's just too much work for a non-ad forum. It's well above the pay scale for the janitors... ahem, excuse me, custodians that work here anyway.

Alternatively, we could just mail Frown lots of energy drinks.

How do they conduct payments/transactions? Paypal/Venmo?

Noone to fight off the hordes of spambots that would immediately take over the boards then.

I'm not suggesting we need more discipline. It might be nice to have more janitors. You know, more people to share the load of running this place. Some suckers might even think of it as promotion.

Trollheart 07-07-2022 06:33 PM

I think the point is that, to date, only one person has requested this as a function of the forum. I don't think any of the rest of us want it. After all, if we want to sell something to each other we can do it via PM, and there's this great new site I heard of called obay or ubay or something like that. Seems to be doing a lot of business. We're a free site too; adding ecommerce or whatever might compromise that.

It is recommended that you use PayPal or your own credit card to protect your right to dispute a payment or conduct the transaction face to face. Do NOT use PayPal family and friends. If you are scammed PayPal can't help you with a payment made on that basis. Let the Seller know they will either have to eat the PayPal fee or you can negotiate a final price with them.
