I have a suggestion, and maybe I've suggested it before but I keep being reminded of it.
When a new member creates a thread for (example) a band that already exists, to ask a question for which we have threads already (such as music recommendations), why don't the mods move the posts to the relevant existing thread, rather than just locking the new thread? Is there no option for that? I appreciate that a link is often provided for the appropriate thread to post in, and that actually moving the post to the appropriate thread is a bit more work (since you have to find the destination thread first), but it would keep the forums much cleaner IMO, instead of having locked threads everywhere, and be more useful to the new member as well as contributing that post to the existing relevant thread, keeping the conversation going I suppose or reviving that thread. Thoughts? Maybe I'm thinking too much. I do think too much. I also moderate on another forum and move posts/merge threads far more often than I lock anything.

It depends on the post.
If someone has gone to some effort with it I'll move it to the other thread. If the post just consists of 'who likes this band' and little else I'll give them a link to the existing thread & lock it. Or i'll do this if they're continuing to start lots of new threads without looking. Most other mods do the same thing,

I tend to merge, but like Dick said, it's mostly dependent on the content.
So, Sidewinder, you mod somewhere else but you won't mod here? Sounds to me like your priorities are f*cked up.

The site I moderate is much smaller and is a pretty close group of people. This forum is absolutely huge in comparison, and would require more of my time. I have serious problems concentrating at work as it is, I'm always looking for distractions (one reason I've left for a few months at a time on a couple occasions) and being a mod here would provide too great a distraction. Also being obsessive compulsive, I would look for ways to clean it up and not only moderate stuff I come across, but look to clean up existing stupidity. I just don't need that kind of job.

Sometimes I close and post the thread they should post in only because I'm worried if I merge they won't know where their thread/post went.
