at any rate, abrogating free speech for the sake of an ethnic slur is idiotic. people will find a way to inject malice into their vocabulary without the likes of racial epithets.

if you're going to forcibly trim accepted vocabulary, do it under the auspices of curtailing flaming instead of preventing people from seeing something they might find offensive.

when it's offensive BECAUSE it's inflammatory, remove it.

Forgot nick, and yid if you want to really stir the pot.

Didn't know you liked Robbie Basho.

The best thing you've ever posted. I second this 100%.

Whether you agree with it or not isn't the issue here.

This is a decision thats been made for the good of the forum regardless of individual opinion.

Any racist comments are not allowed. It's not up for debate, there's no grey area. That's how things are. End of story.

^ And I second this post 100%.

While it's not being used, no-one's offended.
If no-one's offended, then there are no complaints.
No complaints...everybody's happy.

It's a good rule, I never use it, in part because I remember what it was like in the 1960's and early 70's in particular, but mostly because I know how offensive it is to people today. I just see no reason to say a word, that is never essential to conversation for me, if it's likely to offend someone.

Those other slurs Lucifer Sam mentioned are different in my experience, I also don't use those, but I've met someone of the race they are slurring that was offended by it. Also none of them are nearly as prevalent within daily life where I and most of the members of musicbanter live. While I agree with the sentiment of your post Sam I see this as a worthy exception that regardless of it's merits purely on equity does the site no harm and potentially a lot of good.

It's not about abrogating free speech it's about abrogating pointless emotional arguments, or what I think is now called "flame wars".

That's how I see it anyway, does that make sense to you?...anyone else?

If you're posting in the music forums make sure to be thoughtful and expressive, if you're posting in the lounge ask yourself "is this something that adds to the conversation?" It's important to remember that a lot of people use each thread. You're probably not as funny or clever as you think, I know I'm not.

Personally I dont see how this is even in debate. Like any website this forum needs new members to stay alive. With slurs like the ones mentioned littering the site, less people are sure to join, much less stay. This is a music forum, and If you need to type any of those things there plenty of other places on the internet for that.

Does this mean I'm not allowed to start a thread about The Niggers? What about mentioning the song She Ran With A Nigger by Johnny Rebel? Both actually involve discussing music, so they should be permitted, right?

Yes they can. I don't remember anyone getting warned for talking about the Nas album when he wanted to call it that.

But naming song titles or band names is the only time it'll be tolerated.

All it means is that people who have been here a long time and have contributed get to post in 32 forums as opposed to the 31 forums everybody else is allowed posts in. I hardly think thats much of a big deal.
i never knew there was secret forums, so what does the average member have to achieve to have access to these?
