Message boards now adays have become so bad
i can't tell you how many times I've wanted to post stuff that was totally relevant and conducive to message boards i've found online, but I get auto-blocked because these discussions are now subject to simple and instant novice banning. For example, i was really enthusiastic about posting in the "What Weird Sh*t Are You Listening To Right Now?" thread, but when i posted links to these john cage songs i admire, I'm told that I need to post 15 times in order to include links in my posts. In other words, I gotta troll and pointlessly seek approval in order to easily share something I genuinely enjoy. So, me making the music available for typing or copying/pasting good for n00b, but me making the youtube music one click away bad for n00b?
I mean, I get how letting people post links can be an issue, and this is more of general problem I keep seeing on both 90's style message boards like this one and reddit. It probably has to do with a general increase of fear and anxiety, and the causes I will not go into because honestly I only have some guesses. I feel a pretty deep sense of disgust with a merit based systems that can never give benefit to the doubt to anyone. I definitely think over moderation is just as bad as completely letting the floodgates swing open (and oh, trust, i know what kind of horrendous nonsense can come out of that). Content does tend to have a way of policing itself, so in the end, message boards and social media quality just has to do with the general interests of the people who use the sites. Unfortunately, the interests have gotten a lot more spammy and inconsiderate with time. |
