kendrick made it

that’s a lot of curb appeal for people who listen hip hop for the street cred

Damn straight, that's why I gave it so many listens before I was sure that I wasn't just missing something.

Because it has a lot of the things like the spacey atmosphere that I love about the two previous records and it combines them. It's not as abstract as TPAB, but it is a more focused record and it is just as political and personal. I just think it catches a lot of hate for doing a lot of things right personally, and I actually hated this and GKMC when I first heard them last year. I'm late to the Kendrick party, I bought TPAB blind because I heard such good things about it, and I didn't like how it didn't sound exactly like it. It's gotten to be about 1a and 1b with TPAB.

What’s your take on My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy?

It's tight. I think it's Kanye's best album, and that one took time to grow on me too.

The bolded is what I really do enjoy about the record. It's brilliantly crafted on a lyrical level. I don't really see what it drew in from TPAB that wasn't present on any of his other records though. As far as "doing things right," I'm sure that Kendrick wanted the album to sound exactly like it did, the outcome just happens to either bore or annoy me. Not a huge fan of GKMC either but at least it has a dark vibe that I can get behind. Have you ever had back injuries from cringing? That's what DAMN. does to me.

@OH: I really like how it's progressive in a way that most rap doesn't dare to be, it even has the sample of 21st Century Schizoid Man.

@Frown: I think it does have a darkness. I would say this is probably his most aggressive record. I think what it maintains from TPAB is that it is more abstract than GKMC. Like track 3 "YAH." establishes this really pleasant and mellow change of pace and the next handful of tracks kind of have this more atmospheric, jazzy, TPAB vibe. I must've completely missed that when I listened to it the first time.

Exo and Frownland are doing you a solid engaging with you. It might seem like a post count old boys network thing I’m going to say here but it’s not. It’s based on your opinions. You shouldn’t talk about hip hop. Humble yourself and learn something first.
