Dear Diary From First To Last ALBUM REVIEW
Dear Diary, full album title Dear Diary, My Teen Angst Has A Body Count, is the debut album of post-hardcore band From First To Last.
Pro 1 of Dear Diary: When people mention the style of music "Emo", this is the first album I will mention. This completely set the standard of Emo Pop Punk/Post-Hardcore. When you hear the first actual track of this album (Track 1 is an intro-esque thingy) "The One Armed Boxer VS The Flying Guillotine", you know that this album is going to be nothing but pure Emo Post-Hardcore. And you are not disappointed as the album goes on. Pro 2 of Dear Diary: Listening to this album from first to last track (Pun intended), it feels like the singer "Sonny AKA Skrillex" is battling against his emotions. You'll have a song like Emily, which is an acoustic love song about a girl, then you go to a song like Kiss Me I'm Contagious, which feels like the singer wants to do more than just love a girl. Then you go to the song Secrets Don't Make Friends, which is about the singer's most personal secrets being spoiled, then to a song like Minuet, which is an instrumental acoustic song that just packs pure feeling, then onto a song like "I Liked You Better Before You Were Naked And On The Internet", which is about a girl crushing his heart. On every song, the singer is battling against every emotion his teenage body can sustain. Everything from loving a girl, to being left by a girl, to wanting to kill and maybe something worse a girl, and then pure acoustic greatness and more. Con 1 of Dear Diary: One of the main problems about this album and maybe even the whole "Emo" idea in general is that it is easily turned off by people and it takes a certain type of person to appreciate Emo music. Most people hate bands like FFTL and Fall Out Boy and P!ATD because they look emo and speak what they feel and some people dislike the stereotypical Emo person who speaks their feelings and cuts themselves and what-not. That's why this album was turned off by the Post-Hardcore scene, because at the time, not a lot of people liked the idea of Emo. *cough*deathbystereo*cough* Con 2 of Dear Diary: Some of the lyrics on this album can be questionable. Maybe not questionable, but you just wouldn't expect some of these lyrics and styles on this album. With the track "I Liked You Better Before You Were Naked And On The Internet", we've already established that this band is Emo Post-Hardcore. But they make this song with I think is a drum machine and very clean vocals and no guitar, it just doesn't really fit on this album. And the acoustic tracks on here, "Emily" and "Minuet" are not what you would expect either. Hearing an Emo band do an acoustic song, it just seems rather absurd. Then the bonus track, "Dead Baby Kickball". First of all, oh God, that title. It starts out with this extremely weird sounding instrument combination. Then, after that, the weirdest sounding vocals ever. Like, I had no clue what was going on. It sounded like Sonny huffed helium and then auto-tuned himself and then de-amplified his vocals and changed the pitch a little. Then, MLP (Major League Playa; Rapper) starts rapping. Then, the most insanely hardcore sounding thing ever. Then, a weird synth outro. I had no clue what I was listening to. I don't have a problem with shaking it up, but when you already set the bar, you don't need to completely get rid of the bar and step on it. Overall, some of the songs on here sounded out of place, but it was not a huge problem. Favorite tracks: Note To Self, Secrets Don't Make Friends, Populace In Two, Minuet, and Ride The Wings of Pestilence Overall, I rate this album a out of , it was a good album and one of my favorites. I'm guilty of owning a physical copy of this album. :P Last edited by POMers Anonymous; 12-14-2014 at 01:14 AM. |

That was what emo was all about, other bands to note would be Rites of Spring, Honeywell, Moss Icon, The Hated, and Indian Summer. Then there was another wave that was more accessible, stuff like Cap'n Jazz and Sunny Day Real Estate. All bands to look into when exploring the development of the genre.
And it's also not that absurd to go acoustic, check these out |
