The Music Banter top 500-A response to the Rolling Stone 500

From now until the end of the year lets attempt to have some fun.

In this thread, post your top 20 favorite records in your order of preference. Meaning, if Gun's and Roses Chinese Democracy is your personal all time favorite album, you would rank it at number 1.

How is this going to work?

At the end of the year, I will go through all the lists, hopefully we will have a massive landslide of lists, and tabulate them using this formula:

The record with the lowest number of combined rankings will be considered the best album of all time.

Examples.

Lets say based on three peoples rankings, GnR's Chinese Democracy had rankings of 1, 10, and 20. That would be a combined score of 31.

Now, lets say the Beatles Rubber Soul was also in 3 peoples rankings, and those rankings were 1, 1, and 5, for a combined score of 7.

Rubber Soul would be ranked higher than Chinese Democracy.

Is that easy enough?

But what do we do if a lot of people only rank rare, obscure records and we have a bunch of one-sees.

Well, we really want a lot of input from everyone, so the more lists, the better our overall list will be. Will we actually get 500 records? I don't know, but we can try, and I willing to do all the work tabulating everything at the end. ( I'm a spreadsheet master!)

This will run starting now until the very end of the year, if this thread takes off we can prolong it but this will run at least until December 31, Admin approved of course.

The only requirement is, you have to be a member here.

Of course discussions are always encouraged as are blurbs associated to the albums you choose to rank.

Lets have some fun, post your top 20 of all time!

NO WAY!

I genuinely had this idea once before but I thought the amount of time and effort it would take to calculate this as well as actually getting the people involved would be a nightmare.
I am so up for this though, Chips. It's a cracking idea.

We'd need 25 members to participate and none of their choices to match though to make 500. Perhaps just a top 100/200 would be more feasible. However, get one of the Mod's to sticky this.

Let me have until this time tomorrow to contemplate the ordering of my top 20 and I'll give you the first submission.

(EDIT: Pretty sure this came straight from SOMB - use of the word 'Admin' but never mind, glad someone brought it up)

Zombeels 08-09-2014 12:55 PM

Should we have rules for albums like no various artists packages and no greatest hits comps.?

Isbjørn 08-09-2014 12:59 PM

This is a brilliant idea and I will contribute.

Very good question, because I was wondering if I should include a mixtape or not.

I'm gonna try for this, but don't expect it anytime soon. I'm not much for ranking things, so this is going to take a while even to come up with the albums I'll be considering.

But if no one mentions Nickelback's Silver Side Up except for one guy who puts it as his number one then won't that invalidate this forum's entire existence?

I think you mean Radiohead and that's already been covered in the list before your post.

What? No, I'm saying that according to his rules it sounds like since Silver Side Up would have a score of 1, it would be at or tied for top spot. If Music Banter's official position is that Nickelback has recorded the greatest album ever made then I am leaving this site.

I don't think it works out that way but I won't explain his process.

I'll let him do that.

Goofle 08-09-2014 03:16 PM

Surely it makes more sense to award the #1 albums 20 points? #2 gets 19 and so on.

Yes, this would be the correct formula. My original formula was conceived under in the influence of lack of sleep and heavy doses of narcotic laced buttermilk.

I will edit the original post when I get home with all relevent corrections.

Also it would not be fair to include greatest hits compilations in this.

Let me know if there are any other ground rules you all would like fleshed out.

Chips.

I was thinking, should there not be a multiplier in place for albums that appear on numerous lists?

Say Goofle puts Album A as his second choice, that would earn that album 19 points.
Say myself, Briks, Ninetails and WhateverDude put the Album B on all of our lists but at lower rankings than 2nd, say we ranked it 18th, 12th, 20th and 15th respectively.

Album B would have 16 points. Album A, Goofle voted, and say it was just Goofle that voted it, would have 19 points, would rank higher despite only being mentioned once.
Surely the album that was mentioned four times would be better representative of a Music Banter (as a whole) top 500?

This is a hypothetical. I used everyone hypothetically.

Exo 08-10-2014 08:05 AM

I'm just using this as an excuse to see what everyone claims to be their top 20 albums. I couldn't care less what the outcome is. Just being honest here. I just wanna see what you all like and if you guys can give me a new album to love.

FaSho 08-10-2014 09:01 AM

I think the multiplier idea would work. Or at least adding an additional number of points for every list an album appears on. It will be interesting to see how the final results compare to this list http://www.musicbanter.com/general-m...rding-rym.html

Anyway will update with a list soon

Frownland 08-10-2014 10:14 AM

1. Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band - Trout Mask Replica
2. Peter Brötzmann Octet - Machine Gun
3. Marc Ribot - Saints

5. Madvillain - Madvillainy
6. John Coltrane - Meditations
7. Billy Woods - History Will Absolve Me
8. Keiji Haino - Koko
9. Wolves In Sheepskin - Indecent Vibrations
10. Matana Roberts - Coin Coin Chapter One: Gens de Colour Libres
11. Eric Dolphy - Out to Lunch!
12. Naked City - Torture Garden
13. Sonny Sharrock - Ask the Ages
14. United States of America - United States of America
15. This Heat - This Heat
16. Fantômas - Fantômas
17. Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, and Han Bennink - Topography of the Lungs
18. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Axis: Bold As Love
19. The Fall - Hex Enduction Hour
20. Sunn O))) - Black One

Not the ideal order but close enough.

The Batlord 08-10-2014 10:44 AM

And Manky's issue with the goal of 500 is definitely true. I doubt even if we could get to 500 that past maybe a hundred the list would be any good. It'd probably just be a collection of a bunch of albums only mentioned at the tail end of just one of each of our lists. Also, the dude who made the thread is a newb, no offense, so there's no guarantee he/she'll be around when it's time to tally the scores. If so there needs to be others willing to pick up the slack, specially since in a few months people are probably going to forget it even needs to be done. Also a good reason to sticky it so it doesn't get lost somewhere around page ten. There's obviously enough interest to justify that.

Zombeels 08-10-2014 10:58 AM

I did something like this on another forum years ago and for tabulating I thought it was more important how many lists an album appeared on rather than the position, which is why I would give every album an additional x amount of points for each list it was on.

Define "dad rock".

14232949 08-10-2014 02:43 PM

anything Trollheart listens to...

Naa, but in all seriousness, I reckon AOR, classic rock even up to 60's/70's progressive.

I think the only person on this site who's taste in music is more derided would be DJ.

14232949 08-10-2014 03:19 PM

I use the term dad rock very lightheartedly towards the older members.
I know music's subjective, I'm not one of the pretentious people who'll say "your music taste is bad, listen to something I like, but if you do I'll have to now hate it"
I'm cool with everyone liking different things.

Out of interest what would you define as dad rock?

The Batlord 08-10-2014 03:25 PM

Music that a dad would listen to I imagine. Classic rock and hair bands these days I suppose.
