It was the summer of 1998, and I found myself at Ozzfest, grooving to a sound I couldn't describe. It was funky, but it was metal, as well as punk. A mix of musical styles I had yet to discover. If there is one best method of discovering new musical styles, being at one of the biggest concert venues is certainly a good way to go. Snot delivered the goods, and then some. Riding on the wave of their first album (which disappointed in sales at first release in 1997), Snot was fast becoming one of the best acts of the year. It wasn't long after me seeing them live that I ran to the nearest record store to purchase it. The playful nature, combined with absolutely brilliant guitar work, and Lynn Straits vocals were enough to make me wear this album out for years to come. I love how they seamlessly go from full Metal attack to Lounge Lizardry without batting an eye. From the face melting "Joy Ride" to the relaxing, and almost dreamlike quality of "Get Some Keez", this album keeps coming at you with an attitude.

Lynn Strait (singer) died shortly after I saw these incredible musicians, and not surprisingly, the band really never recovered from the tragedy. It is a sad thing to say that the exact chemistry of this band may never be realized again in the history of music.

Rating: 9.5/10

I love every track on this album, but of course I do have a couple favorites:

I have to give a special mention to Mr Brett.

It's entirely possible that the nucleus of System Of A Down came from this. Serj was on Straight Up, and had been in the same scene for a few years before their debut. Just a hunch.

Holy ****.. Is that you in the pic?

How about going through the riffs in the songs that you like and describing them, like I did in my celebrated review of I'm With You.

Yup, thats me, and ummm... no.

I would go through em all, but I usually don't have a lot of time. There are quite a few shorter reviews of albums here with far less in-depth analysis, and I'm not really sure why you picked mine to give your blessing. But yeah. Thanks.

You just need more practise is all, read my review over and over until you get the hang of it.

Has been a long time since I listened to this album, I recall when I first heard "Stoopid" upon the albums release on Loud, a show on Much Music here. I went out and bought the CD and wore it out. Thought it was amazing stuff to my 16 year old brain. I have listened to it over the years, and it has not resonated the same with me as it once did, I find it to be not near the masterpiece I once thought it was.

But it will have its place, and its nostalgic value from time to time will keep it near.

At least this thread isn't a total wash.

I get what you're saying. It had been a while since I listened to the entire album, but after posting this I put it on for the drive home from work yesterday, and there were some tunes I felt like skipping over. I also forgot about the "WELL VIVA LA ****IN' FRANCE MAN!" line.

Wow, can't believe you saw Lynn live. The CD's cover is that of his dog, that also died in the car accident. I was given this CD by a friend probably after his death, not sure of the time frame. Was a bit different than what I normally listened to, but I liked it for that reason.

I don't know if you've looked into the live album that was put out, but the live version of "Absent" is my favorite version of any song by them. The live version is not on YouTube, but it's this song:

The live version has so much energy it's unreal.

I was given this album by a friend light years ago in high school. I never did listen to it.

So, it is worth it?

If you like punk-ish nu metal, then yeah. It's pretty 'out there' too. The deceased singer called themselves lounge metal, or something like that. I still throw it on every once in a while.

I have that tribute thing they did after Lynn passed. A lot of those songs sound like they were forced cookie cutter material just to satisfy the rec exec's and put out an album that was supposed to happen but never did because of Lynn's untimely death. Which is basically what it is. The two songs (Absent included) that were finished with Lynn and Angel's Son are probably the only good things to come off of that. If you've never heard Angel's Son, give a listen. I can't listen to it with out tearing up a bit.

Had no idea that Sevendust song was about Lynn.

The live version of "Absent" is on this record. It's track #8. Also, "Choose What?" was good off this as well. The rest was live material from their debut album.

Snot reformed under a new singer later on, but it obviously wasn't the same. I don't think many people would have the history of seeing Lynn live, so you sharing some of what you remember would be cool.

Hmmm...

*scratches head*

We arrived at Ozzfest at around noon, with a case of beer and a couple gel tabs. We dropped, drank a beer (saving the rest for after), and proceeded to get in line to get in. By the time we got in, things were kicking in, and my friend (Wiggles) says to me "Now, don't lose me" and proceeded to run to the front of the main stage with me chasing after him while yelling "What the ****, *******!". After a few moments, Lemmy comes onstage and announces "Good morning Wisconsin, this is your ****ing wake up call!" and dives into Iron Fist. This pretty much set the mood for the entire day.

Fast forward to about 3-4 pm. After we got separated by the mosh pit for Coal Chamber, I found Wiggles at second stage grooving to these guys. I was taken instantly by the heavy, yet funk-ish groove they were laying down. I had never heard someone scream then fall back into lounge singer mode ever before. It was glorious. I asked Wigs who they were, and when he said Snot, it really didn't register. I was like wtf does he just keep saying "Snot" for. Then it hit me. Ohhhh... duh. We rocked them to the end of their set, then hit the cooling station.

Pretty much all I can recollect.

Plankton 05-15-2015 12:30 PM

I found this gem of my old band doing "Snot" by Snot, if anyone wants to hear some low-fi bunch of never-gonna-be's perform it.

Cool, man. Thanks for sharing that story. And that cover's pretty good. Can't be easy to sing like that.

Plankton 05-16-2015 05:22 AM

Thanks. He really did that song well. Found him in a Blockbuster singing and asked if he'd like to join a band. Typical rags to rags story.
