I guess what others want to hear is Metallica at their full potential. They had it, and we know they still have because we've heard it. I'm not saying they should sound the same, just expand the boundaries around. They could of improvised what they had going, but instead followed down to produce lower quality music under their own abilities.

There are always going to be expectations of a band depending on what you hear, and obviously these expectations are a drive forward from what they've got. I guess that's why it's such a let down, because it wasn't seen as satisfying. I agree that the comparisons between actually ignores the album as a stand alone, which I think is unfair in a way. Most fans of any band will go back to their roots, and I think in a way, in this case, it's a very personal thing.
