We need a "Spam of the Year" category in the year enders.

Ugh, Death Magnetic was the pinnacle of mediocrity. Borderline sh*t is what it was. James used to be a decent singer in the 80s. Now he can't stop doing that stupid blues singer crap. The riffs and drumming were dull and the production makes me want to puke. Seriously, AJFA sounds fantastic in comparison and it has the 2nd worst production. It's got energy, something the last few albums had lacked, but not enough to save it. It really is just a cocktease of their 80s material and rather than wanting to make you listen to more of Death Magnetic, it makes you want to listen to their earlier material.
Either that or a better band. |

They went downhill long before Death Magnetic. Load, Reload and St. Anger were progressively worse albums than what went before and the band's dignity disappeared with each of them. When St. Anger was released the backlash was immense, people thought it was the worst thing they had ever heard. Death Magnetic was a vast improvement in comparison, but as was said, is still a jumble of mediocrity compared to their 80's output and seems nothing more than a shallow throwback.

The Black Album is as bad as Load/ReLoad and St. Anger.
Although, nothing is quite as hilariously attrocious as a couple of songs off of ReLoad. "The Memory Remains" (wtf is all I can say at the poppiness of this one) and "The Unforgiven II". Or the documentary, which makes you lose any respect you could possibly have had for Metallica. |

I wouldn't say Black was that bad, but yeah, it was pretty bad.
Edit: Really this topic has been discussed to hell and back. Most people agree that Metallica is an overall mediocre band; a few solid releases and a few really bad ones afterwards. Nothing else to really discuss. |
