The two are so different despite coming under the new-wave banner, Talking Heads highly innovative, experimental and very uplifting, nobody else quite sounds like them, only Pere Ubu rivalled them at the time and possibly XTC. Wheras the Cars were literally an American new-wave milestone with songs built to last, who were able to evolve out of their early basic sound and Ric Ocasek lyrics and song-writing were one of the most unique around. I need to be in the mood to listen to Talking Heads and appreciate their quality, but The Cars I can put on any time and enjoy and they`re timeless. I`ve also met Ric Ocasek and still treasure his autograph;)

Maybe because I am from/live in the states, it is the complete opposite for me. As far as whos music I prefer listening to the most often. The Cars have really been overplayed for me through the years, personally anyway. Where the Talking Heads seem more unique, simplified, and fresh.

The personality, style, and sound of the lead vocals is where is personally connect a resemblance in the two.

Talking Heads were far more popular in the UK than the Cars were back in the 1980s and the Talking Heads especially around their Speaking in Tongues period were serioulsy overplayed and it was always cool to be seen liking them and David Byrne. The Cars were only popular here on their first album and then again on the success of "Drive" several years later. Most people know the Cars here, but they`ll probably only know one song!

Didn't the lead vocalist on "Drive" die a few years back? :p:

Benjamin Orr the bassist/vocalist died in 2000. Hell thats 11 years ago, can`t believe it!

I remember another song that was popular, released four years later than Drive in "88, "Second Chance" by 38 Special. Are you familiar with this one?

Yes I know them quite well, but I only like one or two songs by 38 Special especially "If I`d Been the One" from the Tour de Force album.

"Back Where You Belong" and "Second Chance" were always my personal favorite. "Hold On Loosely" is so overplayed.:o:

it's hardly my fave Talking Heads but i can't deny its influence, especially on the whole zolo scene

there seems to be a dearth of good tunes on this album, and as with most people here, their pinnacle for me is Fear Of Music, when they were still quirky, and not quite "pop" yet, and also incorporating Afro-Cuban rhythms

Yeah, I think "Fear" is the clear cut winner for most people in regard to the Talking Heads-- great album, but I like the debut that I reviewed and "More Songs About Buildings and Food" quite a lot as well.
