Thumbs up 21st Century Breakdown - Green Day

21st Century Breakdown is a breakthrough. Green Day is taking on a new sound, and not everyone is happy about it. Some long-term fans yearn for the old-school punk that we all know and love. The fact is, Green Day has matured. They are no longer the pothead slackers from the 90s. They seem to really have put an effort into this album, even if it does sound more poppy then usual. Each song is unique, from slow, calm songs like 21 Guns or Last Night on Earth, to hard, pissed-off songs like East Jesus Nowhere, or Horeshoes and Handgrenades.

I admit, some songs can be boring. "21st Century Breakdown" and "¡Viva la Gloria!" are good examples.

Perfect, no. Superb, yes. 4/5

I wouldn't say it's a great album, but definitely solid. It's given more heat than it should be only because people were so used to the old Green Day. I definitely would still choose Dookie or American idiot over it, but I agree about the uniqueness, the best part of the album to me is the variation between the different songs.

Green Day matured from the album before this one but I feel like this album was a step back. Not like it was a return to their earlier work but it just wasn't as top notch as American Idiot.

It let me down to be honest I voted 3/5 but I really should have voted 2/5.

21 guns is boring and annoys the crap out of me. I hate that it was the song that got super popular and had loads of airplay and plastered all over commercials and movies.

I honestly liked the album. Big difference from American Idiot. I'm an old school Green Day fan but I quite liked the change. Honestly I think if some bands didn't change, we'd all get bored of hearing the same old stuff album after album. Don't get me wrong, some bands can pull off using the same sound their whole career but a majority fail at it.

What is this big difference that you speak of? It's very similar to American Idiot imo.

Are you kidding? 21st is total crap, not a single memorable tune, aside from 21 guns and Do You Know Your Enemy (or whatever it's called), which aren't memorable for good reasons. Grating, poorly-written songs. American Idiot is full of awesome tunes and great melodies, and Jesus of Suburbia is just such a trip.

No, I'm not kidding.

I'm referring more to the structure of how they were both rock operas concept type albums not the quality of the actual songs.

I definitely prefer American Idiot to 21st Century.
