Cool thread.:)

Agree.

The distance is probably the most boring song they've ever written (well, next to sheep go to heaven).

Disagree. Sheep Go To Heaven is a good song on the album, but they did the **** out of it live with a call and response audience participation. Even though it was in France and the audience didn't speak English.

Come on with the Showroom of Compassion review, we all know how bad the album is already, just let us have it.

Here, I'll write one:

It's poop.

End of story.

You thought so? I thought it was really solid. I'll do a review soon. I'm working like a MFer, moving, and training for a bi-athlon. I'll be all over the review (now that you've besmirched one of my favorite acts) next week.

I grew up in Northern California, so I take CAKE for granted. I assume every single person on this forum listens to CAKE and I was proven wrong by reading this thread and seeing some folks' responses.

I agree with most all that you said, Big3, and I'm glad there's someone on here that did some above average CAKE reviews. I couldn't imagine doing better myself.

Although I recall wanting to say: "Where Would I Be?" is a beautiful, beautiful song. It was one of the first tracks I learned on the guitar (interesting finger plucking), the lyrics are spot on, emotionally for me, and the track has lasting power. It's a great contemplative track. The horn section is fantastic as well if I recall correctly.

Additionally, Showroom of Compassion was average on first listen (being, my least favorite to date) and has grown enormously to stand on its own as it should. At least 3 5 star tracks on the album, the hit or miss single (miss for me, but it's all right), and a solid few other tracks. Teenage Pregnancy being a nice change of pace for them. I await your review.

This is how a lot of Cake fans I know felt about it. Its weird to say this, but if the album started at Track 5 (Wasted, I think) and played all the way around to Track 4, it would have been received a whole lot better (In my opinion.) It just seems to start with tracks that work as mid-album songs.

Edit: Also, Did I not review Comfort Eagle? Where the hell did that review go?

Here it is.

Recommendations:
  1. Comfort Eagle
  2. Long Line of Cars
  3. Love you Madly

1. "Opera Singer" (McCrea, Mark Kornweibel) – 4:06
2. "Meanwhile, Rick James..." – 3:57
3. "Shadow Stabbing" (McCrea, George Kane) – 3:07
4. "Short Skirt/Long Jacket" – 3:24
5. "Commissioning a Symphony in C" – 2:59
6. "Arco Arena" – 1:31
7. "Comfort Eagle" – 3:40
8. "Long Line of Cars" – 3:24
9. "Love You Madly" – 3:58
10. "Pretty Pink Ribbon" – 3:08
11. "World of Two" – 3:41

I must recommend Arco Arena. For being under 2 minutes and instrumental, it packs a great vibe and an unforgettable riff.

Shadow Stabbing, Comfort Eagle, and Commissioning a Symphony in C are also tracks I love to death and would be fairly miserable without.
