pop underrated? i mean, if you try and forget that they've made any other albums then maybe pop wouldn't feel like that long and that redundant of an album.

but why do you think it's overrated?

I also think of Pop as slightly underrated, even in the light of their other albums. It seems they tried to do something fun and then frequently get shot down for it. It's understandable that people may not appreciate the weird disco's glam style and so on, but I don't think the songs are horrible.

Gone is the real pop gem on the album for me, but I also think songs like "Do you feel loved", "if you wear that velvet dress", "wake up dead man" and "Miami" are basically good.

In general, Pop is way too pop for my tastes, but that goes most of U2's output.

Definitely not horrible, as you pointed above they do have some fun songs in that mediocre set

just a massive disappointment due to poor execution of ideas.

I think it has some of Bono's best lyrics on it...and I think it was a nice departure for them. I also think that "Do You Feel Loved", "Staring at the Sun", "Gone", "Please" and "Wake Up Dead Man" are among the band's best tracks. Sure, it has some real clunkers on it, but pretty much every U2 album since Achtung, Baby has. If anything, this one has the least amount of filler. (Up to their new offering, which is probably their most solid effort since 1991. Minus the middle, of course.)

I just feel it's underrated because so many fans immediately list it as their worst album, when it's far from their worst. I'd take a colossal flop over an effort in mediocrity (R&H, Atomic Bomb) any day.

Some really good reviews, roygbiv. Are you ever going to be doing a 00s set of reviews for U2?

Mediocre? I really liked All that You... had some really class tracks on it (mostly the first four)... Atom Bomb was alright, nothing special about it and Horizon was a bit ****e too except for a few tracks, but yes sir, it would be great if you could write reviews for those ones also
