The Drones - Havilah

http://www.thedrones.com.au/images/discs/havilah.jpg

this is kind of all over the place. the lead singer kind of sounds like the guy from scratch acid. the music careens from blues to noise rock to dark folk and everything in between. maybe the songs need time to grown on me but on first listen they sound a bit unfocused and tend to drift along, shifting abruptly. some songs are also unnecessarily and distractingly dense. interesting listen though. 6/10

the vampires of dartmoore - dracula's musical cabinet

wtf? putting this album on would be a great way to make a room full of people really uncomfortable.

pretty laid-back fusion of progressive and psychedelic rock. very king crimson at points, but without the originality. could be worse...

cardboard adolescent 02-03-2009 09:50 PM

the mae shi and the fiery furnaces come to mind, although both have their camp aspects as well.

i agree that the album can be a bit grating on first listen. if you gave it time i bet you would change your mind.

Somehow simultaneous sinister and snotty as fuck, when they pick up they really rock and sound like a dreamed of long-forgotten post-punk band, and when they wind down they delve into creepy Current 93 style ambient folk. Noisy, dark, pissed off, etc. Very good.

HP Lovecraft on PCP.
:yikes:
