Burial - Untrue (2007) (electronic, house, indie, debut album, genre)

Ok, so I know this might be a little late in the game - considering this album was released a little over a year ago... but I JUST found it, so glad I did!

Just listening to the record is a nomadic voyage replete with alien soundscapes that trip-hop and skip beats and seem to haunt your every step. All of this get done without a discernible genre to put it in. this is my first time listening to burial and i must say, its beautiful. i know his debut album came out to good reviews and even more press began to stir when people realized that Burial is one-man-show without an identity. No one knows who he really is. Shrouding the artist in mystery seems to lend a cooperative hand in the kind of music he produces.

If you are a fan of the decadent Sigur Ros arrangement and the fear-evoking The Knife, then Burial is the perfect cousin to the obscure haunted playhouse of indie music. (7/10)

i believe he confirmed that he was norman cook.

anyway, i kinda liked this album but not enough to keep it. a much better dubstep album was the mixtape by dj/rupture last year, uproot.

Nice. Thanks for the recommendation... I was shocked to be so moved by dubstep. I never really thought I would ever be interested in 'that type of music'. It's fun to prove myself wrong sometimes!

Ive heard so much about Burial yet to my shame have never got around to checking anything out yet. Clearly you would suggest I do so but what does everyone else make of it?

I noticed the update from Wikipedia that you have already put up there but yeah he revealed his identity quite some time ago now. This is the statement he made on Myspace:

"hi

for a while theres been some talk about who i am , but its not a big deal
i wanted to be unknown because i just want it to be all about the tunes.
over the last year the unknown thing become an issue so im not into it any more.
im a lowkey person and i just want to make some tunes, nothing else. my names will bevan, im from south london, im keeping my head down and just going to finish my next album, theres going to be a 12" maybe in the next few weeks too with 4 tunes. hope u like it, i'll try put a tune up later

I know it is silly to let these things get in the way of enjoyment of an album, but I have to admit that my enjoyment of this album was impaired by the hype it received. That's not to say I enjoyed it less merely because it was hyped, but that rather, due to the hype, I was expecting fireworks...so MUCH more. Like, this amazing masterpiece, a classic of the decade. And, whatever way one wants to look at it, that's not what it was.

But it is good in its ways. Archangel is a superb piece.

To be fair it's very chilled dubstep and not the best indicator of what the genre is about.

A fine review. A bloke I work with gave me Burial to listen to last year. I had no idea of Dubstep as a genre or of Buriel's Untrue. I was immediately impressed. A very good album.

Burial is alright for sure. I also was not into this "kind of music" before I heard his first record. I like the first, self-titled better for certain reasons, one being that the style was new to me. I am 100% supportinve of anyone who makes something within a certain confine and does it different from everyone else. Props to Burial.
