I'm all for the idea of albums that are greater than the sum of their parts, where songs are just a part of the whole. This is actually the case for DSOTM, WYWH and Animals just as much as it is for The Wall, actually.
I think the songwriting in The Wall is excellent, I like how a lot of the songs are short and segue into each other as if they were part of a suite, much like the last half of Abbey Road. The only awful tracks IMO are Vera and Bring the Boys Back home, and they don't really fit with the theme and story of the album anyway. |
right-o but i think it's silly to sacrifice good songwriting just for the sake of a storyline. it works a few times (think S.F. Sorrow) but more often than not it just accents the disparity between songs in terms of their overall quality. i really just don't like the last four songs on either disc.

The Wall was pretty much just a big mess with a few good songs.

I think Us and Them is probably THE track from DSOTM but to be honest I rarely ever play the album unlike Animals which is one of my few CDS in a mess due to it being ever played.

Nice!

The first Pink Floyd album I got, and my favourite. A classic.

Nice review, and I agree with your assessment of Money. I like the song, but not in this place. It is one of the few PF tracks that can stand on its own as a single and doesn't benefit from an album.
I'll have to try playing the album without it at some point, but I've never skipped it despite my feelings. The album is fantastic even with Money there. I also like your assessment of Brain Damage and Eclipse, my favorite "song" on the album as neither can be played without the other. THey are inseparable. |
I really enjoyed this review and of course the album

Thanks for the review, it makes me listen to the tracks in a different way! I just liked the atmosphere of each song as a whole, but now I understand better the relationship between the music, the lyrics and the listener (in this case, me).
I'm sorry, I think it's not english :D |
