Being lectured about good music by a Counting Crows fan. That pretty much makes my day.

Son of JayJamJah 08-06-2007 07:08 PM

What's wrong with counting crows?

MHDTV 08-10-2007 05:59 PM

Boo boo just dislikes Adam Duritz, there's nothing wrong with them. They have amazing lyrics.

Flea and Smith are completely average on this song, as is Kiedis, except for his lyrics which blow, though to be fair hes not one of the best songwriters in the world. The only part i'll give you is Frusciante being good on this, but I wouldn't expect him to be bad since hes the most talented member of RHCP.

I agree with Boo Boo - I don't think Flea is average on this song. You have to consider the role of a bassist and Scar Tissue has a fairly well written and effective bassline. And it is more than just root notes anyway, there is some lead stuff. I wouldn't call it one of his best basslines, but on the scale of things, it's better than average IMO.

I think those lyrics are decent:

Young kentucky girl in a push-up bra = nothing special but nothing wrong with it

Fallin all over myself = sex references
Lick your heart = lick her breasts
Taste your health = possibly oral sex

With the birds Ill share this lonely view = this is quite a great line IMO, using the perspective of birds flying over the world but not having the capability to do anything about it - gives a sense of loneliness

BTW, have you heard Niandra Lades & Usually Just a T-Shirt?

Anyway, I like Californication quite a lot. For me, BSSM > Mother's Milk > OHM > Freaky Styley > Californication...

MHDTV 08-11-2007 12:13 AM

The only Chili Pepers albums that come close to Californication are One Hot Minute and BSSM.

Looking at my comparison again, I'd probably switch Freaky Styley with Californication, but I still prefer Mother's Milk to Cali.

MHDTV 08-11-2007 10:38 AM

Why? The songwriting, musicianship, musical diversity, and vocals all trail Californication.

i couldn't agree with you more. the reason frusciante doesn't shine so much is because RHCP sound is derived from the bass/drummer combo... not because hes not talented.

MHDTV 08-15-2007 07:41 PM

He's very talented, and writes killer riffs!

Music can't be quantified like that. I just feel that I prefer Mother's Milk.

Magic Johnson is a mostly average song, but it has one of my favourite riffs ever in the second half. Stone Cold Bush is my equally favourite RHCP song. Higher Ground and Fire are both great covers. Pretty Little Ditty is beautiful.

It has a great range of songs. Despite being in their crazy funk phase, apart from the above songs, they had great slower songs like Taste the Pain and Sexy Mexican Maid.

The basswork is better than Cali's, the guitarwork isn't as good and I love the presence of Flea's trumpet.

In this comparison, I'm ignoring bonus discs, as those tend to differ from country to country.

MHDTV 08-17-2007 06:49 PM

So you just prefer it.

Pretty much. I am biased towards bass though, even if Frusciante is my favourite guitarist ever.

MHDTV 08-17-2007 07:39 PM

Lol. Californication has god-awful production though...Rick Rubin is generally pretty consistent.

Yes, this album is seriously hard to listen to all the way through, the production makes your ears bleed

Would be curious to hear this album remixed

ProggyMan 09-12-2007 04:46 PM

Eh, I think loud production goes well a bass n' drum oriented sound. *shrugs*

tbabassist 09-15-2007 12:07 PM

I enjoyed the album a lot and it started off really strong but, as said before, it really needs a remixed edition. This album is better then the stuff they bring out later which is kind of sad. I hope they come out with something half decent soon.

littleliza 10-05-2007 12:20 AM

one of my favorite CD's, (i have a lot) I think my fave song is "Around The World"

karaiskakis 10-06-2007 04:23 AM

very good

anticipation 10-06-2007 09:30 AM

it was good
i enjoyed it when i was like, 7 years old.

Dr_Rez 10-06-2007 11:53 AM

I have to disagree with one thing. The beat for otherside i feel fits in there absolutely perfectly. Chad smith does a great job with keep rhythm and feeling of the song. he uses a basic rock beat, with some funk influence and a couple creative licks.

ps: great review, this is probly my favorite album of all time along with BSSM and BTW. And you did good job reviewing, especially with Road Trippin. That was a perfect way to end the album.

Dr_Rez 10-06-2007 11:55 AM

I forgot to add, one more critisism you should have added was that the songs Around the World and Purple stain really dont belong on this album. I love them, think there geat, but they dont fit the mood of this album, and they digress back to older stuff from mothers milk and such.

ProggyMan 10-06-2007 12:02 PM

Personally I think RHCP should have stuck with the pure funk on Freakey Styley. I am a huge George Clinton fan. BSSM is still my favorite. I don't like Californication much.

That would have been cool, but i cant see AK rapping like that at the age he is now. And if he did, it would be quite funny

And if that happened we wouldnt have been able to see Frusciante blossom into the guitarist he is. Especially his mothers milk playing.

ProggyMan 10-06-2007 12:09 PM

Personally I'd be fine with Flea and Chad Smith being the virtuouso's in the band. To each his/her own.

Prog as much as we disagree (lol pretty much on everything) i love ya for keeping me on my toes.

ProggyMan 10-06-2007 12:22 PM

Strangely I prefer BTW over all their work besides BSSM. Seems a finely crafted pop album with occasional forays into funk.

I'm guessing you've heard Give It Away? Great drumming.

sleepy jack 10-06-2007 12:39 PM

He's an average drummer.

9/10 of that song is him repeating the same 4/4 drumbeat over and over.
