Nirvana- nevermind album review
Alright, so I’m unoriginal, but there’s really nobody that can say they dislike this album. As cliché as it sounds, there is a reason that this will always be remembered as the definitive rock album of the 90s. The album has sold nearly 20 million copies in the world. As I mentioned, for a good amount of time this was my favorite album of all time. Nirvana was really the first rock band I got into, and I spent a good year being completely obsessed with this album. I remember playing Smells Like Teen Spirit over 200 times in a single month.
The Highlights are definitely Smells Like Teen Spirit, In Bloom, Come As You Are, and In Bloom. On my greatest songs of all time list these classics come in at number 4, 12, 28, and 43, respectively. But songs like Something in the Way, Stay Away, and Lounge Act add variety, balance, and consistency. Even weaker songs like Territorial Pissings and Polly are better than 90% of the music out there today. The album flows well, with heavy tunes on tracks 1-11, and finishing with the very beautiful and tender Something in the Way. So why isn’t it number one? Well, first of all, this album isn’t very mood inducing. There’s more rocking out, than there is introspective analysis. Also, while being incredibly catchy and addictive, Nevermind doesn’t produce much of an emotional response, except maybe anger. Next, though incredibly timeless in general, there are some songs on the record which get tiresome after repeated plays. Finally, the vocals on this album are merely average; let’s face it, Kurt Cobain was a genius, but his singing can be painful at times. 1. Smells Like Teen Spirit – 9.8 2. In Bloom – 9.2 3. Come As You Are – 9.5 4. Breed – 7.5 5. Lithium – 9.6 6. Polly – 6.7 7. Territorial Pissings – 6.9 8. Drain You – 8.0 9. Lounge Act – 8.4 10. Stay Away – 8.5 11. On A Plain – 8.2 12. Something in the Way – 8.6 |

"I hate this album. Really". I have a similar quote to that in my sig cos it's the way these boards seem to be heading lately. swim, you've been here ages and I expected a more interesting reason than the one you gave. |

In Utero was always my favorite though =/ |
Bleach didn't have Dave Grohl?:-|

my nirvana knowledge isnt what it used to be :o: |
Chad Channing did the drumming on Bleach.
|
I'm fairly certain Dave was not on Bleach at all.

It wasn't constructive and it doesn't progress the conversation. |
That's another thing everyones like zomgz Dave Ghrolz!!! I like Channing he's not impressive but it definitely fits.
Because I really hate this album. If I would've made the post "I love this album" there wouldn't be anything to be said about it so I don't understand why a post with the same effectiveness but on the opposite side is bitched about, which doesn't progress conversation either, huh. I didn't make a personal comment or say anything demeaning. I can't stand this god damn album. |
what are other people's favorite songs on the album?
|
Territorial Pissings and Something In The Way are the only noteworthy songs on this album. Everything else is just weak grungy fluff.
|
What exactly makes Kurt Cobain a genius?

Well it's certainly not for his contribution to quantum mechanics.

Don't underestimate Kurt's mad quantum skills rt.

Much prefer BLEACH to NEVERMIND and don't rate IN UTERO much at all. BLEACH had the essence of what grunge was about, and it sound's amazing considering it's zero budget production (well $600).
I have always felt that NIRVANA were the wrong band at the right time, I like a lot of their stuff but it barely registers in my top 100. |
Sometimes it makes me wonder if this albums detractors hate this album because of their theological standpoint (the album that sold grunge out or whatever) than a musical one.
Id say it the pop production on it is pretty good. Personally I prefer In Utero in terms of both aesthetic and composition but Id still rate Nevermind. If it had been recorded with acoustic guitar on a 4 track at home I doubt it would have gone multi platinum. |
I think 'hate' maybe a too strong a word as far as i'm concerned.
I think the word I would use would be cynical. I would say as far as Nevermind goes that it's a good impact album , but once that initial impact as worn off you are left with very little. Just looking at Nevermind it seems like a checklist for mainstream success. Good looking blonde singer ... Check Clean production with hip producer ... Check Loud anthemic lead single (Smells Like Teen Spirit) ... Check Follow up mellower single (Come As You Are) Sensitive ballad (Polly) ... Check Potential follow up singles (Lithium , In Bloom) ... Check Loud shouty short song to break up the commercial songs (Territorial Pissings) ... Check Slightly longer meloncholic 'serious' song (Something in the Way) ... Check As well as this you talk to any rock DJ from around 1990/91 and you'll find out that Nirvana were practically forced down their throats by the record company long before Nevermind even surfaced. It's no accident Nirvana became so huge no matter how much people protest against it. Like I said I don't hate Nevermind , I just think it's an OK album. I just see very little in it to keep me listening to it anymore. For an album thats supposedly revolutionary I just think it's so damn safe it hurts. |
I'm guessing Linkin park have also been shoved down many a dj's throat, but no one will be writing eulogies about them in 10 years, despite their immense commercial success...

O.o...I had my suspicions of course but....it is a bit of a shock I must say. A homosessual in our midst...

Just saying what chicks I know have told me.
It's not as if Tad Doyle is gonna become a poster boy for grunge anytime soon. http://hulatown.bigredindian.com/Mab...yle%202004.jpg |
I'd tap that.

I used to love Nirvana. Now I'm kinda sick of them. I still like Nevermind and In Utero. I'm sure I'm going to get some disagreement about this: They certainly weren't the most musically talented band in the world, but THEY SAVED MUSIC!!! No more hair bands and other crappy 80's "music". I mean the 80's were dreadful and if Nirvana didn't come along who knows what the hell we would be listening to. Maybe some other grunge/punk band would have broken through, but who knows.

He hated himself and he wanted to die.

Well I secretly didn't mind them either at the time.
Much in the same way the emo kids here secretly like MCR & Fall Out Boy , So I think it's a fair comparison :D |
Yep, I still have my Motley Crue and Poison tapes.
