It was tough to get through both of them, and I really can't remember anything about the two albums that was distinct or interesting. Just a lot of dissonant noises that fade in and out every 2 or 6 minutes. Actually, scratch that... Gira's voice is fantastic, but it's also fantastic on My Father, which is much more manageable and interesting than their other releases. In my opinion. Perhaps my starting point skewed my opinion.
I have to say I find your description of those two albums as "a lot of dissonant noises that fade in and out every 2 or 6 minutes" very surprising. There are some amazing, quite structured and melodic songs on both those albums. "Killing for Company" off of The Great Annihilator is seriously one of my favorite songs of all time. Gorgeous instrumentation, amazing dynamic, also really depressing. It's very hard for me to imagine listening to a song like that and not finding it an least distinct sounding.
