Just throwing it out there.

The source is simple logic. The Lady Gaga character was created to generate money, and she drastically modified her self image to fit the mold of what the character had to be.
What I do know is that she was a prodigal piano player in childhood, went to a well established art college, dropped out, and spent years trying to break out continually failing to achieve an audience. Eventually after years of that, she gave in, and utilized the help of a studio producer by the name of Rob Fusari. They cowrote a brilliant new 'character' for her to play.
Again, I don't understand how you could get together with a studio producer to invent a new character, then drastically change the way you look to fit it without it being a commercial decision.
