For me, I just don't want to be an easy target for some hate project should I ban someone who gets pissy.
I got a death threat once when I participated in a whaling discussion even though all I did was post the estimated size of the north sea minke whale population, thus arguing that the problem of whaling is not so much ecological as it is moral. I wasn't exactly scared I would get killed, but getting the threat made me realize that at that point, my real name, address and even phone number was easily found with a couple of minutes of google searching. If someone on /b/ had requested a hate hit on me, it would've been very easy. So, now I try to be a bit more anonymous.
That and it's messy here!
