Yeah, i feel you on this, but mainstream hip hop will probably never come back to life. I think as far as the term "groundbreaking" goes, it can only be applied to the underground (with a few exceptions). I'm pretty sure that most people either aren't intelligent enough to tell or just don't care whether the music they listen to is original in any aspect, so don't expect too much from pop music.
