If you like the way that sounds and plays just step up to the Epiphone Les Paul Standard. My friend owns a special to and its really not a terrible guitar, but certainly does not inspire one to play.
You can get Epi standard SG or Les Pauls depending on the model from 200-500 range. Gibson may be putting out a lot of crap but Epiphone is still producing solid instruments.
Or go a totally different route. There are so many low to mid range priced guitars that are fantastic today.
