I liked some parts but ultimately decided not to get it. It wouldn't be until 2009 that I would decide to listen to a Sonic Youth album from start to finish ( Daydream Nation). Even though I saw them live around 2004-5.

I loved Dirty from the moment I heard the first crazy feedbacked riff of 100%. I think it is the perfect starting point for SY newbs. It has plenty of accessible material but still has plenty of the crazy guitar antics that made them famous. My favorites are probably Theresa's Sound World, Sugar Kane, and Wish Fulfillment. It would take me about 4 years to pick up Daydream Nation, not be impressed by it, and then another 3 to listen to Goo and decide I needed their whole discography.
Oh, and I'll buy records Butch Vig has produced based solely off that. I love the sound that guy gives bands. That's why I picked up AFI's Sing the Sorrow, and I actually really like that album.
