It's a major shame that only the toilet humor side of Zappa is really known. I mean, it's a very important side, but I think the intellect of him, and his music, is by far one of the most underappreciated aspects of Zappa. Albeit, I doubt he'd be pretentious enough to mind.
Honestly, I think as acclaimed as he is, Zappa is still by far one of the most under-appreciated figures in all of music. The way he'd fearlessly hold his own opinions, and had such a respect for a wide variety of music while even more fearlessly showcased an irreverent spirit to mainstream trends.
He opened doors to forms of musical experimentation in mainstream rock music that were just not possible before. Honestly, music would been a way darker blander place without him.

To be honest, he's my musical idol. Not only was the man a total genius, but he didn't limit himself to any one genre. Sure, you have bands that mix styles, but Zappa's one of the only people who's covered pretty much everything possible and done it
well. As you say, he stood up for his opinions, etc...he was just generally an amazing person.
