Top 5 Reasons Why New Prog Is Better Than Old Prog
I originally said this in my top 50 thread, and everybody was all LE GASP! BLASPHEMY! at me and I think I'll elaborate. I'm sure Boobs is going to have a heart attack once he sees this, but whatever. I'm going to talk about Why New Prog Is Better Than Old Prog.

The New Genres Of Prog
Back in the heyday of prog, there wasn't many prog-spinoff genres. I mean, there was some, but not many. Nowadays, there are tons, including two genre that are brother and sister that I love very much; Post Rock and Math Rock. I hear of post-rock getting hate for it's repetition and droning nature, but I actually love it very much, from Explosions in the Sky to Godspeed You! Black Emperor, to God Is An Astronaut. I think it's a very musically interesting genre. Math Rock, Post-Rock's testosterone filled brother, is a bit more complicated and a bit faster than post rock. It's filled with OMGWTF-worthy time signatures and jerky, twitchy guitar lines. These two genres are awesome, no matter what other people say.

The Mars Volta
Yes. This pitchfork hated, blob of modern prog. They are one of the most popular modern prog bands, and have two static members (Cedric and Omar) and then there's The Mars Volta Group, which is an ever changing, never static line up of people playing the rest of the instruments. Let me tell you, this is a good band, and DO NOT LISTEN TO WHAT PITCHFORK SAYS ABOUT THEM! Not to mention that Cedric and Omar are quite good looking... *Teenage Fangirl Sigh*

The Sudden Explosion Of New Prog Bands
Moar Prog = happy Dayvan. It's common sense.
#2:
Avant-Rock (The Demented Version Of Prog)
Now that prog has resurfaced into a cooler, more fulfilling genre, another genre of prog is on the rise: Avant-Rock. It's not afraid to be weird, unpredictable, or inaccessible at all. You've got some great artists such as Battles, Kayo Dot, Tyondai Braxton, and a lot of noise rock. It's a genre on the rise. Experimentalism FTW, and Avant-Rock forever!

The Advance of Technology Since the Prog Era
There's more technology now than there was back in 1973, so of course with the technological advances, prog's gonna be much be much better. More odd samples, weird guitar effects, instrument exploitation, and the ability to be just plain crazy. You can now have weird loops, fuller sounding recordings, and you can use that weird sample you took of your coffee machine more easily! Hooray, technology!
But I'm not saying all old prog is bad. It certainly has it's good moments, but I like today's prog a bit more.
