shrader also based his screenplay heavily on robert bresson's film
pickpocket, which would have made a very appropriate match-up. except that there is absolutely no contest as to which is better. shrader himself has said
pickpocket is "an unmitigated masterpiece" and "as close to perfect as can be." actually, as i'm sure you know,
pickpocket was an enormous influence on every film you've mentioned in this post. anyway, for me:
