Soundgarden is classified in the Heavy Metal and Alternative Metal genres also, "if that sounds any better" than Grunge, formed in 1984 Cris Cornell was lead vocalist and the drummer, until Matt Cameron took over on drums in '86.
In my opinion, Kim Thayil is underrated as a lead guitarist, and that Soungarden was one of the main bands that 'Defined Grunge' music within the 90s (in my opinion), especially more so after Ben Shepard replaced original bassist Hiro Yamamoto in 1990, Soundgardenrden enveloped Alternative Rock of the 90s into the Grunge sound/Seattle Sound with their style of music, other main contemporaries were Nirvana, Alice In Chains and Pearl Jam.
Soundgarden set the standard for grunge music in '94 with the release of their album Superunknown, and so on into the next decade.
Post-Grunge is a subject Im not to familiar with, or pay very much attention to if it is 'splitting hairs' a little too much (as to say), although I do agree with the band Bush as having a post-grunge sound as so suggested, but Im not 'so sure' about STP labeled as post-grunge.
