LOTR wins by leagues both with the books and the films. I enjoyed the HP novels as a kid, but growing up you realize that Rowling has an extremely flat and unimaginative language. Tolkien's prose on the other hand is very rich in its descriptions and the overall complexity of the world suggests an enormous amount of dedication. Tolkien's vast knowledge of celtic and nordic myths is also evident throughout, and adds a very special flavour to the books.
The movie adoption of LOTR is certainly not without its flaws (especially the third one), but I think they were very well done, and Jackson did a great job on what must've been a very difficult task.
