Hell that should be a popular opinion in my mind. All the cool kids in fantasy try and stay away from Tolkien clones. A Song of Ice and Fire, The Malazan Book of the Fallen, Anything by China Mieville and also a lot of stuff by Neil Gaiman come to mind.
