I used to be a big soundtrack freak when I wanted that to be my career. Not so much these days because there are more pop tunes than orchestral in movies these days. Nothing as interesting as the classics. My all-time favorites are "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and "Planet of the Apes". Amazing scores by John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith. Also:
Unbreakable- James Howard Newton
Inside Man- Terence Blanchard
Fistful of Dynamite- Ennio Morricone
The House of Flying Daggers- Tan Dun
The Cell- Howard Shore (anything with Shore is usually good).
Good Night and Good Luck- various jazz standards performed with the amazing Dianne Reeves on vocals.
Heavy Metal- Elmer Bernstein (the orchestral score album, not the rock songs soundtrack)
Blade Runner- Vangelis
