I'm from Michigan, and we're sorta surrounded by water, so a Michigander that doesn't or hasn't fished is a rare thing. I would love to go salt water fishing sometime, but it's a bit of a drive for me to get to an ocean.
I mainly catch bass, perch, pike, and carp. In the spring I like to go sucker spearing, and my skills are so pro i was able to spear a crayfish once. Won myself $2 from the nonbelievers.
I use a 7' light rod, XPS performance series(Bass Pro Shop brand). My lure of choice are plastic works and minnows, slightly weighted. I tend to go with Powerbait or Cabelas because they are cheap and do the job and bass aren't super picky. If I am in deeper waters I may use crank bait, like a diver. If I am going for pike, I put a steel leader on my line and use a spinner.
Largemouth bass:
And this is why I don't like using real worms:
I think my biggest fish is an 8lb carp. I wish i could find the picture, but it's nowhere to be found.
I wish I had the means to go out on the great lakes, there you find the real fish.
