i never understood this supposed ethic. Kurt Cobain played plenty of solos on Nirvana tunes. Pearl Jam? Mike McCready is all over the place all the time. Soundgarden, Kim Thayil could noodle like no other - when it fit the song.
the angle was no superfluous solos, no soloing just for the sake of wanking on the guitar. make it tuneful and melodic, and most of them understood it. McCready could be guilty of hairing it up a bit on the early PJ discs though.
if anything it's Nu-Metal and it's offshoot of even crappier late 90s industrial pop that ascribed to the idea that guitar solos should never exist.
