My aunt and uncle are over in California for holiday and they were set to leave on Saturday but the airlines are saying the earliest they could get them a flight would be on the 27th. I think that's more of a worst case scenario thing, but in the meantime they're nearly broke and stuck in San Francisco for up to another week.
During my weekend visit in SF I met a lot of British tourists who were stuck and in similar situations, but I also heard that people are being asked to keep their receipts so there may be the possibility of some kind of reimbursement. I think that some of the major cities should start doing some kind of charity soup kitchen or something because after awhile eating out gets very expensive and especially in cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles, so that would be a very kind act if places like the US and Canada were to step in and help alleviate some of the worries.
According to NBC the airlines are losing 200 million dollars a day because of this so there's some real nasty financial consequences for this too which could hinder the recession recovery process. It really is amazing how one little volcanic eruption could reek so much havoc on people's lives. I tell you, I'm really happy not to be in any of their shoes right now.
