Before that I read Prokleta avlija (The damned yard) by Ivo Andrić (author of one of the best books I've read in the last couple of years, The bridge on the Drina. Pick it up if you haven't already), which was short (100 pages) and deals with similar themes as The bridge on the Drina (short stories from the Ottoman empire).
