I'm not about to say that you might not be onto something, but I might suggest that your logic needs some rearranging. Perhaps it's the pre-existing pain, the overwhelming need for catharsis that is both the impetus for addiction and the creative drive for the artisitic process; aka the tortured soul theory.
The common denominator between drug use and the creative process- sometimes, but not always, is a need to deal with, or otherwise escape overwhelming emotions or life circumstances. To reiterate, this is not always the case, and there are as many exceptions to this as there are cases which illustrate it to be true, however one need only look at the history of modern music to see that an overwhelming majority of it's greatest minds were plagued by serious addiction.
