i'd also go for the PS3 over the xbox. the only time i've ever used an xbox (original) and considered it worthwhile was when it was modded to the point of basically having the built-in media center functionality that comes pre-packed with the PS3. there's been a 360 in the living room here for a few months, i've never seen it powered on, but the PS3 is rarely off.
also, if you happen to own a PSP the connectivity options are pretty nice as well. it streams videos no problem. when a friend of mine goes outside for a smoke he'll grab his PSP and stream an episode of South Park or Family Guy straight from the PS3. he's also the biggest Nintendo fan i've ever met, but he doesn't love his PS3 setup any less.
as for the online thing. why would i want to pay the price of a new game every year so i can play online when the same service is offered for free on every other platform available (wii, ps3, pc)?
i'm also pretty sure there's a way to get custom soundtracks working on the PS3 too, although you might have to pre-load the mp3s onto the hard drive.
